What is the distance between planes coming into land normally on one runway at Heathrow? As far as I know (but don’t quote me on this), think it is standard 3nm. BUT, separation can also be affected by other factors such as weather, aircraft type and so on. For example, the A380 needs requires greater separation from other aircraft than the 747 does due to stronger possible wake turbulence from the A380 – and obviously the preceding or following aircraft type will have a bearing on any separation distances required.

Apparently parallel approaches are also done at Heathrow early in the morning if there are delays (i.e. not much goes out of Heathrow at 5-6am but a lot comes into land, esp. the far eastern heavies). Hmm. I often land early morning, never noticed; I'll keep an eye out.

That looks bad, but the scariest runway approach is St Maarten in the Netherlands Antilles.
Loads of youtube videos of this

When I went to Cyprus I think I landed at Larnaca.
Weird experience that was. Went to the Woolworths tower in Nicosia. Literally thought it would be a huge woolworths - major disappointment as I could just see Cyprus. I saw a hill with a turkish flag on and like a border between it. Tahts all I remember from that, about 8 years ago now.

Didnt realise the woolworths tower was a tourist attraction, not much of a tower even as it cant be more than 10 floors if that.
The Turkish flag you saw is chalked into the side of the mountain on the northern side, bit of a piss take really.

Seen those video's before. Some of the scariest are the landings at Hong Kongs old Kai Tak, the fact you have to fly towards a mountain, then bank around, flying low over houses. And when its windy the plans seem to be landing sideways!!!
How do you put Youtube videos on here? If someone can tell me, I will put some on.
Oh, am back in HK, shit flights on Emirates, packed, smelly people, people throwing up, kids crying all the time, didnt sleep a wink on the 17hr trip!

The picture is not doctored. It is taken with a telelens, probably 500mm or more, which optically shortens distance. Standard equipment for serious plane spotters.

At moments like that pilots really earn their salary! I wonder if the fact 400 people are depending on you makes your sphincter weaker than if just protecting your own life?

Anyway I guess this is the video you are talking about Mmmmmmmm yeah. That seems to be Kai-Tak. I loved landing there. Whatchoo can't see is on the right side you are below the level of the flats in the buildings, can see old ladies feeding their budgies, canaries whatever. HK - did you manage to find a seat at Dubai airport? Ghastly airport, suits EK to the ground.

But Dubai Airport feels like one big shopping centre yet the duty free prices werent cheap
