Has anyone seen a Blackbird? There was one outside my window not so long ago... But if you're talking about the SR-71 I've walked round the one they have at Duxford. I thought if you'd seen one 'live' you'd have to be killed... or a 'spook' at the very least.

Flew Korean Air this week, very good and Incheon airport good also.
Then flew Emirates from HK to Manchester due to the funeral, via Dubai. Service on HK to Dubai leg terrible, but flew A380 from Dubai to Manchester, nice. Agree about Dubai airport, massive but paying to get in bars and smoking rooms with no extractor fans so everyone smoking outside with police arresting people!
Suprised no one mentioned Concorde, must have been amazing to fly on that!

Anyone ever get upgraded on flights, have any "tricks"?
These days I only get upgraded when I use airmiles. I always ask on check in, at the boarding game and even on the plane.
But my brother is a lucky bastard, been upgraded especially on BA several times without asking

Yep, flew in 1st many times transatlantic with American, got steaming drunk on most of those trips as well, for some reason i like to drink canadian club while im flying, jack daniels is for rock bars and famous grouse for everywhere else.
Tricks for upgrades, really is down to the person working at the gate or the check in supervisor.
If you are not time restricted and dont mind a delay get yourself onto a flight that will end up being overbooked, airlines sell 10 percent more seats than they have available. When the check in closes about 30 mins before dept they will ask for volunteers to miss the flt, normal procedure is to get upgraded on the next flight out, and a night in a sheraton or similar type hotel if the flt is the next day, plus travel vouchers normally in excess of 200 usd if no one steps forward. The trick is not to volunteer straight away as the the closer to dept time you get the better the offers are.
A few years ago there were a bunch of people who would do this every weekend on flts out of Chicago and New York. I know the airlines were aware of them but not sure what they did about it.

Anyone ever get upgraded on flights, have any "tricks"? These days I only get upgraded when I use airmiles. I always ask on check in, at the boarding game and even on the plane. I get upgraded on BA more than 30% of the time; usually from economy to premium, very occasionally to business class (flat bed, nice). Secret is to have a gold card (and I haven't booked a flight outside economy for several years) and try to book flights that should be busy - Monday out, Thursday / Friday late or nights coming back. BA is quite good for this as they have stupidly small economy cabins on 777 and 747s - Nairobi, Joburg, even Cairo are good as there are lots of tourists; the middle east isn't so good. I had Qatar and Emirates silver cards for a few years and rarely got upgrades outside holidays (Eid, xmas etc) since they have larger economy sections. Dichio's advice is good as long as you've got the time, Usually if you hang on you can get a much better deal, I reckon they'll generally go treble the first offer . In my experience this works on short haul - airlines would sooner move cardholders up a class (these days business / first seems very rarely to be full) than offload since it doesn't cost them.

Would agree with your comment about short haul flights as they would probably be the busiest. Not having worked at any of the London airports i guess that Friday nights and Sunday nights to places like Glasgow, Paris, Brussels, Dublin and Berlin would be favourites to pull this off. Without doubt the best time to do it though imo is xmas eve, new years and around easter, basically peak holidays. During these periods longhaul flights would be chock a block as well and if your not that fussed about arriving a day or 2 late then its defo worth trying this.

I'm sure you're right on the best time to do it. Once the cchools and unis break up or start going back is good too - yesterday (Monday) got double-upgraded to business going to Cairo ;-)

Am flying back to HK today, Emirates via Dubai, doubt whether will get upgraded on either leg. Going on a 777-300ER

There is an article in the mail today ( not exactly reliable ) about simultaneous landings at SFO with aircraft being 750 ft apart, the pic looks fake imo, what do you guys reckon ? www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1338653/Close-encounter-landing-passenger-jets-San-Francisco-airport.html

I remember landing at SFO about 10 years ago and being surprised to see another plane landing alongside ours... Not dissimilar to: www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3YoE-marko

The mail story, the planes are too close together to be real.

Or, like it says, it's some sort of trick lens. Anyhow, watching the youtube clip I'm not convinced I like this parallel landing malarkey. Anyone know if they do it in bad weather? I certainly wouldn't fancy it then.

The planes do look to close together, the 757 is not small and i was looking at the comparative landing gears and also the cockpits trying to figure out the distance between them, just dont seem right.
From the you tube footage i wouldnt mind the dual landing at all, not sure about what the procedure is for bad weather but i think its safe to assume that it wouldnt be allowed in fog or when visibility is low.

Agree, the picture does look doctored, the proportions just don't add up. In true Daily Mail style, it is sensationalist with little or no substance to back it up. They've added the same youtube clip to the article just now though
Apparently parallel approaches are also done at Heathrow early in the morning if there are delays (i.e. not much goes out of Heathrow at 5-6am but a lot comes into land, esp. the far eastern heavies).
If visibility is poor, it can’t be done as aircraft need 3 nautical miles separation.

What is the distance between planes coming into land normally on one runway at Heathrow?
