Me too. I remember an Abingdon airshow where a Lightning came along the runway at full chat and then pulled up into a near verticle climb. I can remember the ground shaking as if there was an earthquake and within seconds the Lightning was no more than a distant speck. The only plane that would outshow the Vulcan if we ever saw one again (no chance ). I was there too. Just could not remember where the show was so did not post. It was in the sixties and Iwent to Abingdon via Boars Hill from Littlemore on my bike. That climb made an impression I've never forgotten.

Only just seen this thread, nice to know peeps out there that love the planes.
I used to work at Brussels national for AA doing load planning and flight ops for about 10 years, handling 767`s and DC10`S, moved to another company after that and did 2 years on 747`400s.
Started out with a company called London European, which was the sister company to a very young airline called Ryanair, we had 1 bac1 11 which was built in Romania and did a few trips in the jumpseat up front.
Happy days, there is nothing quite like being on the tarmac, the smell and the noise makes it a really unique experiance.

Is there a steam anonymous? Start up a Steam Train thread. I for one have lots to say. Absolutely adore steam trains!!!!

Alcoholics Anonomous? ;D You aint gonna woosh me ;D Had to put up with that for 10 years, i did often think it was run by Idiots anonymous. Some of my fav aircraft visited. Antonov 124, more a ship than a plane. An air Zaire 707 which had some of the overhead instrument panel held together by toilet paper wedged in. And flown on, Bac 1 11 | my first love ;D B727 | Nice shape TU 154 | as above B767 300 | a beaut. can carry some lbs, easy to work on, sweet. Tristar | loved the chunky power look. BAE 146 | wierd looking but super practical shorthaul Never worked on airbus and have flown on them a few times, they have a noise which reminds me of an electric lawnmower and having spoken to a few pilots about them they pretty much all had the opinion that it was to computerised. Not saying they are no good as i quite like the look but they are a different breed.

But they are still going so their longevity isn't under question.

Your right about the Airbus planes Dichio they make a whining noise, you can always tell its an Airbus. Where abouts in France are you located ?

One of my colleagues could shut his eyes and tell me the aircraft type coming in just by the noise and he would get it right everytime. I`m about 30 kms east of Niort and 50 south of Poitiers next to the small town of Melle.

When i was 10 or so in the 70's, I could tell the plane from the sound, 707 and BAC 1-11 being the two most distinctive. These days you can differentiate between Boeing and airbus but not individual models.

We played that game during a 10 week training course in Dallas from March 1988, not many airbuses flying in there at that time, was mainly 727`s, 737`s, 767`s, MD80`s, DC10`s and the like.
With the often clear texan sky it was not unusual to see 8 planes stacked up for landing which often brought the comment of flies around shit, we were less than impressed with the service levels provided in US airports tbh. Since Ryanair, Virgin, Easyjet etc started i can say the same about service levels in Europe now as well.

Dichio, is your work like a busman's holiday? Hello Gavin, Not quite, i left the airline industry 10 years ago and moved to resto and bar work, currently sitting on my arse in france renovating a house before i start a new venture here. Was out for a meal last night and the conversation ended up with me saying how difficult it is going to a restaurant for a meal and not having my buisness head on and noticing all the small details, most of the time that detracts from the fun of going out, last night was a good un though so its not all bad . Can say the same when travelling, from the attitude of staff to the cleanliness of the plane, on time performance etc..Guess its the same with everyone that has some experiance with something.

What are peoples’ favourite/worst airports? (yes, many can be horrendous experiences) Always liked (in no particular order): 1) Changi (Singapore) 2) Barajas (Madrid) seriously cool 3) T5 Heathrow Always hated: 1) Rome Leonardo da Vinci 2) JFK 3) Washington Dulles Ah, airports. Can't think of many I like, and I've never been east of Kai-Tak which I liked because landing there was fun. But:- Like 1. T5 Heathrow 2. Zurich 3. Zanzibar (outdoor check-in does it for me) Don't 1. Dubai (new terminal - impossible to sit anywhere, entry fee to restaurants, too busy) 2. Philadelphia 3. Riyadh
