Seems Midson needs less chances to score where as Constable needs about three chances to put one away.So in my opinion of what we have seen of midson he puts his chances away better than Constable or am i wrong?. Lets debate both upfront or one with other on bench?...

Beano is way more potent at this level, but Jack still offers us a great deal. His lack of pace means he is less likely to find himself in a position to score. We have 5 very good and very different strikers at this level.

Midson has a better "football" brain and when he plays in place of Constable, the number of times we are caught offside is dramatically reduced. On Monday we had only 2 offsides given against us in the whole game.
Its not who is better, its which one is more effective within the team and both have weaknesses and strengths.
One thing is that Midson is far better down the middle than stuck out on the wing in a 433 system.

If both can be played at the same time (which they can - I'm sticking to my theory that Constable fits in on the left of a 4-3-3 because he cuts inside all the time) then there's no need to debate it, but for what it's worth:
Midson does not have a terrific record of finishing all the chances given to him, this is something that has newly appeared this season. Beano never has, but has made up for it by getting himself into goalscoring positions 4 or 5 times a game quite often. If he gets these chances, he WILL finish at least one of them. The end result is a similar goal tally, but my sense is that Constable would edge it, but through his contributions both there and elsewhere, Constable makes us play far better football. When he's been out of the team is largely when we've seen our worst football and some of our worst results of the past few years, and while I respect and like Midson greatly, he's going to have to perform consistently for a long time to be considered as good as Beano.

Craddock is the best finisher at the club, Beano has more presence and guile, Midson is clever and holds the ball well, Green has pace and can finish, McLean has a touch of class.

My goodness. Out of the other Div I and Div II league clubs, plus those in the Conference, I don't think it would be be far fetched to say that 100% of them would rather have Constable over Midson. Constable's record speaks for itself and the consistency of his end of season tally since he has been an Oxford player is much better than anyone else in recent times at Oxford.
Midson is a decent player, with a nice touch and a bloody good bloke to boot but to compare him to Constable from a goal scoring perspective is pointless.

Based on overall scoring records, which is really all that matters, I believe that Constable is a far better striker overall. I can remember many matches where Midson has missed good chances so I am not sure that he has a better chance/goal ratio. It may be true but Constable puts himself in places where he gets chances and this is just as important as the chance/goal ratio.
Few players have a better strike rate with OUFC than Beano (e.g. John Aldridge 64%,Constable 53%, Hamilton 48%, Billy Rees 46%, Paul Moody 38%, Peter Foley 28%, Steve Basham 26%). Aldridge & Hamilton played at a much higher level so their efforts are fantastic but the others played at a similar level.
Can we afford to leave out such a consistent scorer as Beano for Jack? Maybe playing them as a pair upfront would work?
Constable: 116 Appearences (including 8 Subs) ; Scored 62 Goals; Goals/Appearances = 53% This season 10/22 = 46%
Midson: 57 Appearances (including 24 Subs); Scored 14 Goals; Goals/Appearances = 25% This Season 8/17 = 47%

Beano everytime, but keep Midson as he has something to offer.

I think people are assuming Midson will go on and score loads of goals from now on. I'm not convinced that will happen

Midson has scored 5 in has last two appearances. That is good at any level. Not saying he will keep it up (wayhay missus) but it shows the potential.

If you factor in say 50% for Midson being played out of position he rates 63%, which is actually better! I think one of Midson's plusses is that he is better at holding the ball up, which is a similar role to MacLean. This should give Constable space but I don't remember it working very well ever, perhaps cos Constable wanders off and doesn't support his partner? On the same subject, sort of, I'd be interested to see a front 3 of Midson/MacLean in't middle with Constable & Green either side. It's unfashionable on this forum, but Green's pace and size should work against a few of the defences we've played. Edit: Didn't mention Craddock cos, though I've seen him a few times, I can't figure out where he fits, or maybe what he does.

What Constable has acheieved here has been sensational goal scoring wise, but for the next game (and its all about the next game) Midson Starts up front, in the centre, in his favourite position.
Constable will have to fight it out for the other striker positions, because Midson's 1st and 3rd goals vs Torquay were that of a completely natural finisher. The more I watch them, the more I am convinced that Jack has a big part to play this season. I think this has made Wilder think long and hard about some of his decisions.
For the next game, Midson all the way.

Beano on the left of a 433. He might even manage to stay onside if he's not 'leading the line'. On Saturday the number of times he (and McLean) were stood offside when we were in possession was crazy. It cuts down the options for the player on the ball.

Bloody stupid post. Its all about being consistant and even though Midson got a hat trick and fair play to him for that, does that make him better than Constable who has consistantly scored over the last couple of years. Personally I don't think so.

Now he is in his favoured role, he has scored 5 in 2 games. I would play both of them with Jack down the middle and Beano on the right of a front 3. Let Craddock play on the left. I haven't included Mclean as he might not be here very long. If he is, then Craddock and Mclean would fighting for the other forward position. Green on the bench.
