And not such a smoker as the 707 was. Has anyone seen a 747-sp, the shorter version recently? 747-SP only operated by Iran Air, passenger wise I think. Odd looking thing, a jumbo - but sort of not...a mutant cousin almost They were used for long distances I believe. Anyway -

I'm sure I saw a Pan Am one at Heathrow, many years ago. Useless Fact of the Day:The 747-SP was the first—and until the introduction of the Boeing 777-200LR, the only—Boeing widebody with a wingspan greater than the length of the fuselage.

That's interesting. The A380 is wider than it is long too.

SAA used to fly them too in the apartheid years, they had the legs to fly to Europe entirely overwater when a number of African states wouldn't grant the South Africans overflight rights. But yes - horribly stumpy-looking thing.....

Part of my "fascination" with airplanes is I still watch them and wonder how they fly. Of course we know the physics why.. But I watch them in the sky and at airports with admiration. Also, I am one of those people that will "dress up" for a flight, rather than get on in a shell suit or shorts/hoodie. I still feel flying is "special"

Anyone flown Concorde, the most beautiful plane ever. Went to Egypt and back in two days. All paid for by my old man's company. Unbelievable plane, hard to imagine your breaking the sound barrier when your looking outside.

If you want an intersting read, google the tenerife jumbo crash in the fog. I've seen the Seconds from Disaster episode about it. Hard to believe such an experienced captain (KLM) could make such a monumental error. I went to the airport back in 93 just to have a morbid look at the place. I would consider Planecrash Investigation one of my favourite programmes and probably explains my flying phobia despite flying well over 100 times. This is a good site if anyone's interested. www.planecrashinfo.com/

The tenerife plane crash is truly incredible. Mustn't forget that so many lost their lives. RIP.
That JAL crash on the mountian is also incredible. No tail fin on 747.

It also suprises me how many airlines still dont have things like own personal TV. Flew them a few years back on the LHR-ICN-SYD route - wonderfully attentive inflight service though a fairly elderly 747 on the leg out to Seoul. Thought it interesting that there was no at-seat IFE even back then - but top marks for service; hope you enjoy the flight!

As mentioned before, probably best airline to fly overall is Singapore Airlines. Good service, but not the best, top IFE, good food. I would say Cathay comes a close second and was impressed by Qantas last time. In terms of favourite place, A380, very quiet, comfortable, spacious. If you ever fly one, always try and sit upstairs with a window seat.
