It's all about the Lockheed L-1011 "Tristar" ! If you want a trijet what about the good old Hawker Siddeley Trident? Not a jot on the (passenger) type's copybook in the first ten years of operation, then three fatal accidents in the space of about eight years. As bad as the Tristar's record was I'm sure Tupolev's vesion of it was even worse. The things were dropping like flies at one point. The RAF is still using Tristars and, probably more worryingly, VC-10s.

Oh the Tupolev Tu 154 was modelled on the Boeing 727 though wasn't it?
I used to plane spot at heathrow back in the 70's and every other plane was a trident. BEA, now there is blast from the past.

Anyone remember the Boeing 707. Proper smoker of a plane that was.

Anyone remember the Boeing 707. Proper smoker of a plane that was. Yep, flew in many, most noticeably from Hong Kong to Port Moresby courtesy of Air Niugini. Back in the wonderful days of smoking on planes (not) 3 a breast seems so claustraphobic now

Anyone remember the Boeing 707. Proper smoker of a plane that was. Last year, I saw a Spanish Air Force Boeing 707 take off from Las Palmas airport (Gran Canaria)...amazed they are still flying...proper smoker indeed, right dirty old beast. Bloody noisy too.

Airbus A319 or Boeing 737? 737 every day of the week and twice on Sundays. Not a fan of fly by wire. 737 is iconic and has been around since 1968. Legendary.

Anyone seen a DC8 recently? they were the 707's rival back in those days. Strange you should say that - I was in Lusaka last December and saw one parked on the apron at the airport; looked like was in regular service too, not mothballed or parked up semi-permanently. Good-looking plane, that.

Odd looking thing, a jumbo - but sort of not...a mutant cousin almost

Odd looking thing, a jumbo - but sort of not...a mutant cousin almost I think it was also taken by Pan Am too. I'm sure I saw a Pan Am one at Heathrow, many years ago.
