When i was still in my infancy as a driver my dads company car
was a 5.3 fuel injection XJ12 JAG.
"can i borrow the car dad" was my weekly enquiry, and he used
to let me!!!!!!!
Bearing in mind the best car any of my mates used to have was
a mark 1 cavalier,this car was a dream.
Im sure the petrolheads on here will scoff at a 1970s Jag,there
reputation was carp, they rusted to fkk and were as reliable as
Uniteds defence.
But when you are a teenager with a car full of mates bombing up
the motorway to Burnley,Bury,Barnsley or wherever,i really was
king of the road.
First stop Hartwells in Abingdon,(company account) fill up the twin
tanks with about 50 quids worth of juice and away we went.
It was a horrid blue colour and had a black vinyl roof!
but to me it was magic, first car i ever drove with electric windows,
and what an engine.
Once went to Swindon and we stopped off at the Lady Margaret
pub in stratton,(its called something else now)and parked the
car by the side of the pub, loads of Oxford outside the pub having a drink.A gang of scum came down the road and must of thought
we were directors of Swindon or something with our flash Jag,
we told them otherwise and chased them down the road.
The registration number of my dads Jag.
SFC 555 T.
Had loads of quality cars in my life, modern cars will beat 70s cars
hands down everytime, but to this 50 something daydreamer, that
5.3 fuel injection XJ12 Jaguar with all the memories of picking up
the lads and bombing all over the country will forever be my dream machine.
That reminds me of a mate at school who borrowed his dads jag. As he was driving down the road, he thought this is so quiet and wondered how quiet it would be with the engine switched off.
Unfortunately, he forgot about the steering lock and as he turned off the engine a bend was fast approaching.
He never got to borrow his dads next car. ;D
