I'm a time travelling ghost whose age can't be measured by conventional means.

Not the oldest supporter, but as a kid i was brought up in Burnley and used to go with my dad and grandad My grandad went to the Burnley v Liverpool F.A. cup final in 1914,the last one to be played at Crystal Palace. I have a photograph of my grandad and great grandad stood outside the brickmakers arms in Burnley as the team paraded the cup on an open top bus on there way to the town hall.

With Burnley in your blood how did you end up an Oxford fan if you don't mind me asking? I always like to hear stories of fans who could have supported other teams but saw sense and followed the mighty Yellows....

With Burnley in your blood how did you end up an Oxford fan if you don't mind me asking? I always like to hear stories of fans who could have supported other teams but saw sense and followed the mighty Yellows.... Was born in a town called Rawtenstall just outside Burnley, the whole town and area were clarets supporters until the munich disaster, then there was a great swell of sympathy support for Utd. As we were only 17 miles from Manchester this resulted in a large part of the town supporting Utd,my dad could not understand how our local team were league champions (1960) yet people would spend an hour on the bus to go into manchester to watch Utd. So i was brought up on the philosophy that if you dont support your local team (unless you are a Utd or Liverpool supporter)who will. So as i left Rawtenstall when i was 12 i have always supported my local team.I lived in Pontypridd (cardiff) newbridge (newport county)and Wantage (Oxford) so i am a bit of an enigma. But as i have lived here since 1978 and have watched Oxford from Plymouth to Carlisle i dont suppose i would change my allegiance now. P.S.i still have a soft spot for Burnley, still have a Lancashire accent, and in the 70s a few lads on the London rd used to call me Burnley and take the P out of my accent. I went to the 1974 cup semi Burnley Newcastle with my dad and that was the last time he went to a football match until i took him to the play off final Burnley Stockport in 1995 at Wembley, Sadly he was long gone before Burnley made it to the premiership, but i know he would have had a pint of mild with a whiskey chaser when the clarets beat Man utd last season, cause boy did he hate them.

Ed - it's fantastic that you're grandad's still going to games at his age, I hope he's able to do so for many more years to come.
Saddleback - an excellent storey, especially the last part about the pint of mild and whiskey chaser; I'm sure your Dad would have been very happy about that.
