Just seen this on the Sky Sports website www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11096_6286015,00.html Got us down as finishing 17th and being happy with consolidating our place back in the football league. I would hope we finish significantly higher than that, as I'm sure most of us do but are we being unrealistic in our expectations of the team this season?

Can not see this being anything like correct. If it is the bookies have it very wrong. Anything below mid table will not be acceptable however play offs will be slightly over expectation.

I hope i'm wrong but I reckon we could find it a lot harder than we think. I still think we're going to finish about mid table, but 17th would hopefully be the worst case senario.

Very clearly this report has been written without having watched Oxford play. This is maybe what you'd expect from your average/poor conference club who went through the playoffs. Oxford easily had the best quality squad in the conference last season, and but for our usual dip in form, we would've won the league. Now with the new signings, I honestly can't see us finishing lower than mid-table, and I think the competition will help our usual christmas drop-off. If that's the case, we could push for automatic promotion, although I think playoffs are our most realistic goal in that case. I don't see us finishing below Stevenage. Wait for the soccerlens preview, they tend to do decent predictions.

It's fairly bizarre. Sky predict Lincoln to finish sixth - Sky Bet odds to win the league 20/1 Sky predict Oxford to finish 17th -Sky Bet odds to win the league 12/1

So the bloke who does the predictions doesn't fancy us anywhere near as much as those laying the money down do.
I'm happy with a 17th place prediction. With luck other teams will underestimate us just as much throughout the season.

Sunday Times predicted us at 5th. That's more like it.

To be frank, I would be over the moon if we finish 17th at lease not a return to that diabolical place we experience in recent years! I personally think mid-table mark, round the 9th position.

it warms my heart to seee a prediction of 17th, one of the worst things about the last 4 years was the pressure of expectation. hope we don't get fans booing a draw thin season

Betting and predictions quite often dont mix. I know quite often tipster and pundits will play down the chances to improve the odds.
But as some people say, it will take pressure off us!

To be fair from a neutral point-of-view we did only finish third last season, and got in through the playoffs. Sky Sports are probably basing it on that. What they haven't picked up is the amount of squad stengthening Chris Wilder has done over the summer. This is who we have acquired according to Sky Sports:- Players in: Harry Worley (Leicester, free), Richie Baker (Bury, free), Matt Green (Torquay, free), Simon Heslop (Barnsley, free), Jake Wright (Brighton, free), Mitchell Cole (Stevenage, signed), Leigh Franks (Huddersfield, loan), Danny Philliskirk (Chelsea, loan) from www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11751_6286447,00.html There is no mention of Hall, Potter, Kinniburgh, Eastwood or Purkiss.

We shouldn't underestimate this league though, it's definately a step up from the conference. In the conference there were some truly awfull teams and some gimmes, the gap between top and bottom was huge. Not in this league, it is competetive from top to bottom.
ex Conference clubs coming up have a good record and we are in very good shape, however, we did struggle in the latter half of last season, we were 2nd best to Hayes and Yeading over 2 matches so let's not take anything for granted and remember that there will be high points and low points as well
