Than we were in the 70s and 80s
Was talking to a young lad (25) in the pub in Wantage yesterday.
He said he enjoyed reading the "Cuddy"thread and did i know the people
being talked about.
I said i recognised most of the names and could put a face to alot of them
(25/30 years ago). But as to drinking and travelling to games with them
we tended not to mix with them that much.
Obviously on the football specials we would all be on the same train, but
as to total integration it wasnt really like that.
All the lads from Wantage(and there were quite a few in the 70s)tended
to go with lads from Abingdon/Sutton/Drayton and all the villages in the
VOWH.All the lads from Witney and West Oxon used to stick together, and
Didcot ,Wallingford and Cholsey used to group up.I even remember a
mini bus from Thame that used to travel to away games all the time.
Now i know this wasnt Universal but alot of the Oxford lads stuck with
there own mates from there particlar area/estate.
Even at home games we drank in different watering holes,we would often
drink in the Carpenters arms (Mcdonalds) before heading for Whites bar,
and then the Butchers in Headington .While the Oxford lads would start in
the Greyhound before heading for the Oranges and Lemons before
heading for the Brit.
Now im not saying we didnt drink in those pubs and visa versa, but we
didnt really integrate. There were even at times downright hostility between
different factions.Leysers and Berinsfield had a major row over an incident
at a pool match.A couple of lads from Barton got a kicking at a party in
Didcot and the following day at an away game in the cup at Shrewsbury,
there was a hugh mob from Barton looking for anybody from Didcot.
Thankfully those days are long gone, but do we really integrate.
