' Er I didn't get to the game today , Jerome,' but I'm going to have my say anyway. Two words. Poxy friendly.

I'm sure I must also have been watching a different game to DBF.
First half we were ok. The second half, right from the off, we gave those kids a lesson in passing and attacking play. Could easily have scored 4, and still not quite sure how Constable missed one of the chances. I would have liked to have seen Cole come on for Midson, as I think he could cause far more problems for the opposition, and seems to have an eye for goal - Jack always seems a bit shot shy to me.
Heslop and Hall looked good in midfield, both in passing and getting forward. Worley seemed very assured, and also not scared to bring the ball out of defence - can see him giving Beast a run for the right CB position.

I could not go last night but listened to the action on Rad Ox.
I got the impression, especially second half that United were well on top and Heslop and Hall were looking good and Bulman was as energetic as ever. Constable was a threat and Batt and Tonkin ( Batt's name was heard alot) were pushing forward.
Overall it sounded encouraging. Midson must come under a bit of scrutiny however. He has n't looked like scoring for ages and playing him wide in a front three will never be effective in my view. I suppose Cole would have been out there if fully fit.
People I know and respect say we are much stronger than this time 12 months ago and indeed six months ago.
Even a Manchester journalist said that Oxford Utd were impressive and it was obvious they had regained their proper status.

So that's a resounding vote of no confidence in dabigfella's ability to read a game!

Forgot to say, we had a 'celebrity' in OM stand tonight. For the soap fans amongst us he played 'tricky Dickey' in Eastenders and Liz's boyfriend Vernon in Corrie. I saw him! Is he an Oxford fan? Back to the game, improvements are needed before the season starts. Creighton was poor, made two poor tackles that led to the penalty and the freekick they scored from which itself was defended by the flimsiest wall you're ever likely to see. I think Clarke should've saved it too, there was no power on the sho We had enough chances to win the game but only Beano looks like scoring. Green should've scored. Midson doesn't provide a goal threat at all. Improvements are needed all over the pitch, I'm sure that'll happen before Burton.

Don't you think you're being a wee bit arrogant though, telling nearly every other contributor that they are wrong and you are right? Errors are part of play and can never be totally eliminated, and there will always be games when the ball just won't go in. Sounds like an unnecessarily panicky response.

This is my opinion of last night. I originally posted on match day thread when I got home. We deserved to win that game. Very encouraging game from the lads. If we play like that against teams in our league we'll do well. I wonder whether Beast will be good enough for the league. He's great against teams that put in the high balls and deals with them well, I don't think he's so good against opposition that play the ball to feet. It was a clumsy tackle from him that gave away a penalty, if it was a league game he could have been red-carded. Worley played well, although, as I didn't hear the team before the game, I spent the game thinking he was Franks Hall and Heslop had some decent long rang shots. Matt Green missed a sitter, Midson is awful in front of goal. I have concerns that we don't have enough strikers who can score goals (Green and Beano accepted) Hopefully we'll get a few from midfield, Hall, Heslop, LSD and Potter are all very capable. I very much enjoyed the game, I even managed to convert the son of a mate of mine. They are moving back to Oxford from Coventry the end of August and he wants a season ticket.

Pre season friendlies are all about the overall performance and not the result. Also, they are there to iron out any problem areas.
Last night was enormously encouraging in many respects, but there are definitely areas to improve, which hopefully will be worked on before the start of season.
Overall though, that performance filled me with optimism.

I thought the performance was encouraging as well.
Most of the first half was fairly scrappy, their penalty was maybe a bit generous from the ref. We DO need to work on defending free kicks - CW mentioned in his post match interview that they hadn't done much on free kicks yet in training, either defending or attacking.
Second half we were by far the better team. In a real match there would have been far more tackling and physical play from us - the fact is that we dominated without being able to use our superior strength. We should have had a penalty and Greeny should have scored, plus we had other decent chances as well. It was good to see the midfielders willing to a) run at the defence and b) shoot!
There are still a few parts of the jigsaw missing - we do need another striker, not so much to play in the same team as Beano, but to be available should he pick up an injury or suspension. I do worry that Creights might be caught out for pace - maybe we will see a Wright/Worley partnership a few times? We are also still a bit narrow sometimes.
Overall I enjoyed the match, now looking forward to the proper stuff starting!

dbf's opening salvo really is unecessarily negative.
For the a game that obviously lacked the intensity of a league or cup game (honestly, can you remember one real blood and thunder tackle?), I thought it was a worthwhile exercise and emphasised potential strengths and weaknesses.
We look as though there may be more creativity in the midfield, particularly with Heslop and Worley looks a decent addition to the squad. I though Batt was good and Bullman effectively sat in front of the back four, allowing the other midfielders to push on. It's an interesting formation in that it would allow Clist, Potter, Dearing or Cole to play in Midson's place and offer some variation.
Sure, there is a little doubt about where the goals will come from but there are ceratinly more options than last year.
I'm not touting us as promotion or relegation candidates on the basis of one freindly but certainly a lot more positive than dbf.

Teddington ox - my grandparents lived for many years at 41 Queens Road, in a rather substandard terraced house! Do you live anywhere nearby? Used to love walking through Bushey Park to Hampton Court.

Can we briefly stop kidding ourselves that this was a MUFC team barely out of primary school. Possebon is 21 and has played for the first team on several occasions, including in the Premier League. Oliver Gill was on the first team bench last season, albeit during an injury crisis. Although some of them were 18, several of them carry experience at a good level and they were all big lads. The idea that they were four foot tall children is false and doesn't give credit to a second half performance in which a good passing team couldn't get a kick.

Mind you, it was virtually uninhabitable (she'd been in a home).

The shot had reasonable pace on it, close to the corner the wall was covering and Clarkey still got a touch on it. It is also quite a rare type of free-kick attempt which I doubt Clarkey has faced often. If anybody is to blame then it is the wall but as a member of the wall, do you jump or stay down?! Overall, I just think the Man Utd player deserves the credit for a very clever and very good free-kick.

Hoods, I'm further back in Teddington toward the river but not far not far from Queens Rd.
PRB, thanks for the offer. I drive up myself for most home games and since the end of last season with my kids who now have season tickets as well. Might take you up when they're not coming along!
And dbf, I did say there is a slight worry about goals, it was a statement qualified by some positivity, something you didn't bother with.

My boss was a neutral spectator (well almost, Leeds supporter who detests Manure with a passion) last night. He was so impressed with our showing last night, he's putting a tenner on us each way to win the league. Said we should have scored four or five and thought Asa Hall was head & shoulders above the rest.
