I've just used a programme called acronis to clone my hard drive on my old pc. The clone has been transferred to an external hard drive. When my new pc arrives (tomorrow hopefully) I am assuming I simply plug the external hard drive into it, but then what? When I go into my computer on the existing system, the external hard drive clearly contains all the programmes etc but I've no idea how these would become installed on the new system. For info the old system is XP and the new one is windows 7 Thanks

If you put the image down onto your new pc, everything on that will be wiped and you will get the same Windows etc you had before - except lots if stuff won't work as the hardware will be different.

Use acronis to make a back-up not a disc image, of all your files. Backing-up "my documents" usually gets the most important stuff. You can then use acronis on the new computer to restore the data. Remeber that programmas cannot be copied across to the new computer, just the data. Programmes that you want to use again will have to be installed again, but Windows 7 has many many new featues that eliminate the need for other software. More of a problem is e=mail. This has to be backed up seperately. But if you use outlook express then you have more work as there is no outlook express in windows 7. If you use OE I recommend installing Mozilla Thunderbird on the old computer, letting it import everything from OE. Then install MozBackup and make a back up of the profile "default" onto the external disc. On the new pc install Thunderbird and moxBackup and import the backup. All you settings and old emails should then be transfered safely.
If you use Outlook (not OE) then you can export all data and import that in outlook on the new pc. Sounds a bit easier but believe me its not. When I help people step over I always go for the Thunderbird route. And any other mail programme, your on your own!
