these sentances do seem pretty harsh - even if there was roaring and grunting involved

It does make you wonder why people bother anymore as the sentances are so much higher than if football fans were not involved, having said that bet not many of them went to the match as most are already banned, so football wasn't really involved, just a gang of blokes who wanted to fight each other. Having said that it's not fair on innocent people either who might of just gone to their local for a swift pint and then get caught up in the brawl. But 5 years when your taxi didn't make it does seem an unbelievable sentance when there are much worse fights in town centres every weekend and much more gang related violence with youths in London fighting with knives and guns over postcodes.

If I wanted a fight that badly I'd just join a boxing club.

Five years presumably relates to the organiser role rather than the grunting/brawling etc.??

32 years combined for doing very little it seems.
Not saying that they didn't have intentions to do harm but rapists get lighter sentances.
I'm sure the key facts are missing from the report but it seems overly excessive to me when compared to other crimes.

I know it's a bit more extreme, but I don't believe Adolf Hitler fired any rifles, drove any tanks, or flew any Messerschmidt fighter planes in World War II.

That raises the question of whether the person at the top who gives the orders is as culpable as the person at the bottom who carries out the actual act. Of course they are. I believe the posters above are just being incredulous because they haven't considered it in the way you portrayed it.

Totally agree. The sentancing is out of proportion.
I totally agree with efforts to clamp down on football violence, but at the end of the day violence is violence, attacking people (or planning to attack them) because they support a certain football team is no different to attacking people for any other reason and should be punished accordingly.

Except of course, the article doesn't refer to the 'antecedants' of those convicted which influences sentencing. The other thing to bear in mind is that these were trials, meaning that each defendant pleaded not guilty, before being proved guilty. Sentencing is influenced by plea. Logal rag reports don't really go into this kind of detail so it requires the reader to think a bit before making a judgement about the fairness of the outcome.

An Oxford fan got 5 years a few decades back for a handbags with QPR fans on the High street ........the Burnley bloke who got 5 years was a well known hoolie who once appeared on that Danny Dyer footy hoolie program
