But are attendances really down because of Sky and media saturation? There are probably a number of factors behind any drop in attendances. For example, revulsion at ridiculous Premiership wages and the antics of those 'stars', stupid prices to watch professional football, continued financial idiocy from lots of clubs, poor atmospheres, and probably most importantly the financial climate. I really don't think media saturation is at the heart of it, people will always choose how much or how little football they want to watch.
That’s not to say I think Sky/the PL have been good for football in general, there's plenty of things about football nowadays that are awful such as plastic fans filling up pubs in their Man Utd/Chelsea/Arsenal/Liverpool shirts instead of watching their local team, passionless fans filling up sterile all seater stadia etc etc. But as a trend since the formation of the Premier League and all that has come with it attendances in English football have risen dramatically and this is due in no small part to football's increased media profile and its increased cultural accessibility.

Look at Man City a club that used to have real passion, Main road was a great atmosphere and they really got behind their team! Now they have more money than they know what to do with, play in a souless plastic bowl and most games have lots of empty seats.. I bet the "old school" city fans still ove Man City but just don't go as they are priced out You can say that for nearly all the plastic prem teams, give me OUFC any day i hope we always keep it real

I don't really follow premiership but for me the final nail on the coffin was one Saturday when I heard a radio commentator say "the 3:00 kick off today is". I mean, for crying out loud, they should all be 3:00 kick offs! The buzz of coming out of the ground and trying to find out how your rivals got on is gone, sky have stolen a big part of the match experience and the FA have let them (encouraged them).

If people stopped buying Sky Sports, they'd be a lot less games on and much lower pay for the players.

Classic example of where the games going wrong.. Look at the tv games for the 4th round of the f.a cup.. The games are boring ( saints v man utd aside ) why pick everton v Chelsea and Fulham v tottenham?? Arsenal or Leeds v Huddersfield is the other live game Football on TV (commercial TV especially) is all about viewing figures. You and I might want to watch something other than a prem v prem game but the people in TV want advertisers to pay for adverts, so they pick the games that will draw the biggest audiences, not necessarily the most interesting games.

My understanding is that sky sports makes more money from subscriptions than advertisers and the gap is increasing year on year.
