What are the rules on names on shirts? I ask the question because i noticed yesterday that the manure player had his nickname chiquretta or chiquita or whatever on his back,i know this means sweet pea or little pea or something like that, but can you have what you like on your shirt? Last week against Stoke he had Hernandez on his back, are the laws different for the prem and the F.A. cup? If the ref booked him yesterday does he turn him round, look at his shirt and write "little pea" down? If this is the case then the next time i play for Stockham park strollers in the over 50s league im going to have my nickname on the back of my shirt. Id love to see Howard Webbs face when he books me,turns me round and writes "fannny magnet" in his book!

Nothing new, Ronaldinho means little Ronaldo in portugese so as not to confuse him with the other Brazilian striker. His real name does not have Ronaldinho in it at all.
Not sure if different competitions have different rules

Not sure about the rules...on one hand Yemi was allowed to wear "Yemi" on the back of his shirt, but on the other hand Pascal Zuberbühler of Fulham had to have his full name on the shirt instead of Zubi, which he wore his whole career (including internationals, also under FIFA rules of course).
Doesnt seem like a great deal of uniformity there TBH.

Didn't Ruddock try and have RAZOR on his shirt but wasn't allowed?

The provisions for names logos etc on shirts, shorts, socks and even boots is dependant on the competition (or league to you and me) which you play in.
The Premiership rules state that a player's shirt must bear his surname or any other name agreed in writing by the [Premiership] board.

FIFA and UEFA have always seemed to allowed the Brazilians to have their nicknames on their shirts i.e. Kaka, Robinho, Hulk, Dunga, Pele. I know it is part of Brazilian culture but surely if other players want to officially change to their nicknames they should be allowed.

I think we should probably put a stop to this before it gets out of hand, but difficult where to draw the line. Brazilians are known officially by their nickname so thats fine and has always been accepted, but that is not the case in Mexico so in my view he should have Hernandez on his back.
Noticed recently while watching Real Madrid that Lassana Diarra had "Lass" on his back, which is taking the p*ss

How come Rooney hasn't got "Greedy Cu nt" on his shirt then? or Shrek... I agree with amarillo on this, Brazilians and some Portugese are known officially by their nicknames (often their real names are very long and this is why they often go by a shortened name), I have no problem with them using them on their shirts, however Hernandez as far as I am aware is known as Hernandez and should wear that on his shirt. I also noticed the Lass thing the other day and agree that that is also a complete joke!

How come Rooney hasn't got "Greedy Cu nt" on his shirt then? I like this idea... Rooney - 'Greedy c*nt' Drogba - 'Diving c*nt' Fabregas - 'Poncey c*nt' Gerrard - 'Angry c*nt' Bale - 'Welsh c*nt' Tevez - 'Horse-faced c*nt' Carson - 'Dopey c*nt' Then the premiership can be unofficially known as 'Sepp Blatter and the 7 c*nts'. Major selling point I sense.

I don't mind them having a nickname on their shirt, but I think that once they've picked a name to use, it should stick for their career.
