But do the older fans on here remember when we had the
draconian drinking hours.
Moved to Wantage from Wales in 1978,the drinking laws i left
behind were,12 till 4.30 and 7 till 11 Monday to Saturday,12 till 2
7 till 11 Sundays.
Wantages drinking hours 10.30 till 2.30 and 5.30 till 10.30 Monday to Thursday,5.30 till eleven Friday and Saturday,12 till 2
7 till 10.30 Sundays.
I said at the time, what stupid opening hours, who wants a drink
at 10.30 in the morning?and what happens on cup final day, where do you watch the match?(it was massive in them days as it was the only match of the year you could watch live)
"oh we all go home" was the reply.
It was the same all over the Vale of White Horse, the Carpenters
arms on the Botley road(now Mcdonalds) was in the Vale, while
the George was in Oxford,as such the Carpenters used to shut
at 10.30 Monday to Thursday while the George could stay open
till 11,this would often lead to a stream of punters wandering up
the Botley road at twenty to eleven to get a couple of extra pints
in the George!
Dont know where everbody drinks, but when was the last time
you heard someone ring the bell and call "last orders"
My local opens at 9am and always has half a dozen in by 10!
Does anyone hanker back to the old days where there would be
a dozen people stood outside the pub at five to twelve on a
Sunday morning waiting for them to open?
It was amazing how many pints you could drink in those 2 hours
on a Sunday lunchtime.
Back home,Sunday lunch, few hours kip, then stood outside the
door of the boozer at five to seven waiting for them to open again.
You youngsters dont know what you missed.
