I have the opportunity to move to the States with my company, and wondered if you could answer a few questions for me. Just want to know if the grass is truly greener on the other side.
Are there groups of marauding youths, who basically love to terrorize and treat the older generation with utter contempt? Do you have 'White Van Man' over there speeding through small villages and past Schools, with an 'I don't give a f**k attitude'? And are most of the woman over there fat ugly tattooed biffa's, that like to have vomiting competitions on a Saturday night? Whats the knife crime like over there?... are kids stabbing each other over the tiniest immature little arguments? I know you've got crime on a higher level over there, like drug related gun crime. But on my visits to family friends over there, I have never seen that sort of high level crime in the small town that I visit.
So my question really is.... Are there a large majority of scummy youth over there who, for example, would tell you 'You're f**king Dead!', gesturing you're going to get your throat cut, in front of your 8 year old son, because you bumped into them in a bumper car at a fair!
........or have you got the same sort of problems over there?

Malcolm do you have these sort of anti-social problems in Holland? I go to Valkenswaard near Eindhoven occasionally and have always been amazed by the lack of any trouble or drunks in the evenings when everyone leaves the bars. Actually its quite the opposite, everyone seems very friendly.

I've travelled a lot and based on my experiences, what I think sets the UK apart from anywhere else is the widespread nature of anti-social behaviour. You get far worse in other countries, but it is very localised in extremely run down areas so most people never come across it. In the UK it is all around you.

Where I live (Zeist) there are problems round chucking-out time but not much. I never see the problems because chucking-out is at about 3am, at which time I'm busy cutting down trees. The main problem here is unforunately race-related as there is a high proportion of unemployed Moroccan youths who get up everybodies back, including mine. A few years ago the problems came from the Turkish immigrants but they now have integrated very well. The Moroccan lads mainly come from the mountains and are therefore not very highly schooled making job hunting very difficult. Here in Holland you're not going anywhere if you don;t have a degree. But no, normally the Dutch are well behaved in cafes, probably because of the long opening times. Also the youth have developed a drink-habit that I find very strange. They met up at a mates house and drink supermarket beer from 9-12and then go out to the cafe. This last thing does not really explain the lack of troubles but life is reasonably quiet.
