Just had a mass debate in the office about most of the mass violence in the world today being down to religious differences.
Why don't religions preach more tolerance?

I agree most conflict is due to religious differences but arguably its people exploiting religion rather than the religion itself
If there was no religion, people would fight over something else, its in our nature.

Does that mean over half of the world is mad?
They say "It's a mad world" - well Tears for Fears did anyway.

There must be something in religion or so many wouldn't be interested? It is a sense of group belonging more than a genuine belief in a superior being though surely.
Like someone else said we have a religion called football. Or something like that :-)

Religion is a huge contradiction. It's there for people to satisfy their beliefs, find unity and peace among mankind yet in reality does the exact opposite

YES ....MAD and totally gullible, religion was invented to keep the lowly masses down, its the 21st century now....get real!!!! the tooth fairy is more plausible than Jesus/mohammed etc being feckin almighty but by taking such an anti-religious stance, you are basically doing the same as the worst kind of religious people - insisting that you are right and others are wrong I don't like religion, but its up to the individual and as long as they don't shove it in your face (as most religiuos people don't) who cares?, live and let live

It's just a bit sad that so many people waste their lives believing in a nonsense superstition. If more people were able to think for themselves just imagine what might be achieved.

However, the very existence of the 'moderately religious' (if such a thing could truly exist) legitimises the cause of the extremists because it tolerates their worldview. Bit like how if there were no football fans there would be no football hooligans!

Back to the first post. The Christian faith does preach tolerance and peace. Nobody recorded that Jesus went about abusing and killing people. It seems it was quite the opposite.

You can still be a Christian and go to war. Tony Blair did.

Tony Blair was the PM at the time and he was content to agree that he 'don't do God'.

You can still be a Christian and go to war. Tony Blair did. Wasn't George Bush's reason for invading Iraq because 'God told him to'?
