Happy to see Monty in there, he has worked so hard since being dropped by England and his county...you can see the results in county cricket this season.
Having said that, I doubt he will make a significant impact. The bowlers who can get the ball to seam and bounce off a length will be the ones who are most important (i.e. Finn and maybe Tremlett).

Hildreth has had a great season with Somerset.
No real surprises in here.

Minimal surprises. Sadly Foster was never going to be given the back-up keepers berth.
Shahzad can feel a little hard done by, but difficult to overlook Tremlett's attributes.
Performance squad contains a few more surprises. Cannot see how James Harris’s exceptional figures for Glamorgan have not deserved a place when Plunkett is being persisted with.
Rashid’s omission is also bizarre, as is that of Bopara, Wright and, to a lesser extent, Yardy.

Are England going to only pick players from the Ashes Squad for Test, ODI and Twenty 20?

I am presuming that the 11 centrally contracted players will be the selectors' preferred starting line-up then.
As for the ODI and T20 squads, I would hope there will be another squad announcement at a later date. What's the itinerary this winter? Last time they got all the tests out of the way first, then did the 1 dayers in the new year - I should think it will be the same for this tour?

This would make sense announcing an ODI squad later. May need Bopara, Wright and Yardy for that squad.....

ECB itinerary – T20s and ODIs are all in the New Year. Performance squad are "departing for the UK on December 16". Still wouldn’t mind Bopara, Wright and Rashid on stand-by in Australia. Was not so long ago that any of them were in a Test squad.

There was a school of thought that said Bopara was found out at test level by the Aussies in 2009. I am not sure. Think he just had a form dip and Trott came through. Trott is not on form at the moment though and debatable about KP so never say never. Can all change quickly. Bit like England being 194 for 3 and then all out for 222.......

Trott is not on form at the moment though Not on form?? He topped our averages in the past Test series by an absolute mile! Not being doing so great in the one day side - but that's a different kettle of fish, and he arguably shouldn't be in the 50 over side anyhow. But in the Ashes? He's just about the first name on the teamsheet!

But trott is one of the first names on the team-sheet for me, even in the ODI's simply because i don't think there are any guys out there good enough to come in at 3 against the aussies.

The Aussies are not the force they once were. They are rebuilding and now is a good time to play them. Good luck England.

The only obvious ommision I can think of is Graham Onions, who I think can count himself extremely unlucky to miss out as he' been out all season with injury. Whilst yes I agree that Steven Finn has done a great job against Bangladesh and a poor Pakistan, the Aussies will be a different proposition. If Finn fails, or Broad/Anderson get's inured, he has to be the first name on the list of replacements and is more than capable of cementing his place back in the team.
They kept giving Marcus Trescothick central contracts whilst he was going through is stress related issues.
