Hello,
I will soon be delving into the mobile phone world to get a contract with a new phone, and I was wondering what everyone could recommend.
I'm a little reluctant to get the iPhone 4 as everyone else seems to have one, plus they are supposed to have a couple of problems with them (you can't make calls if you hold it a certain way)?
Is it a wise move to shun the iPhone on this basis? I had been looking at a HTC Desire, but I'm not too sure at the moment, any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It is for a reason you know. You want a phone buy the best. 4 it is.

Depends on what your requirements are and what you will be using it for (mostly calls? texting? internet? e-mail? need long battery life?) and how much you want to spend. I always look at the this site www.mobile-phones-uk.org.uk/

I always look at the this site www.mobile-phones-uk.org.uk/ I use a load of texts, but also a fair amount of calls, and I would use the internet a lot as well, as for e-mail, probably not so much. That website is pretty useful for the reviews, they certainly paint the HTC in a better light than the iPhone too.

Iphone is like any other apple piece of kit, shiney shiney, doesn't live up to the hype with strange avoidable shortcomings. I have a samsung, which does everything I ask of it.

I have the Sony Ericsson Satio - 12.1MP camera. Direct upload and viewing links to Facebook and YooTube.
Plus if you get it with 3 you get free MSN and Skype calls (meaning you can call your friends wiht skype for free on comp or phone)
Brilliant phone. Cost me £465 when I first got it because I was too impatient to wait for a contract :L

I have an iphone and regret not going for another Nokia. the internet used to be slow but is better now, but the battery life is unbelievably bad. The keys are far too sensitive. The signal dies sometimes. I used to have a Nokia N95 and have to say that the signal and the battery life was far better and what is more it is far easier to use. I like the iphone, but there are too many negatives and I would look to Nokia next time

HTC desire all the way if it was me. My old man has a desire which i have had a chance to have a play with and I have to say it is very easy to use and understand. Its also east to update and download apps for. It is in effect an iphone, but lacks the limitations of an iphone. Particularly the iphone software which will cost you a fortune and is extremely restrictive in what you can do with it.
In summary, if you want style go for the iphone, if you want substance go for the Desire.

Still locked into a two year agreement with iphone and with O2. The signal for some reason is not good. I hate to think what the signal would be like on T mobile as they were crap round where I live. As I rely on my phone for business use, I will be glad to get one that is far more reliable

Fully in agreement with the fact that HTC phones (and any Android-powered devices for that matter) are basically iPhones with more choice. Apps are mostly free and open-source, the whole thing is just more customizable.

At the moment I've got an iPhone 3GS. I'm very happy with it, it does everything I want of it. It's not as bulky as some of the new android phones, even with my candyshell case on it. I've read on various tech websites that even though you can watch flash clips and videos on the android phones but doing so drains the battery so much the iPhone's feeble one looks good. But I've got a laptop so I don't need flash on my phone, I just wait until I get home. To be honest who needs more than 5mp on their phone cam? Most people just uploads their photos to facebook or alike so anymore than 5 is a waste. You get a larger selection of apps for the iPhone, granted there are some shyte but some are priceless, such as the excellent proboards so I can catch up with the forum on the go. You might of guessed by now I quite like my phone. I do. And so much so I'll be upgrading to the 4 at the end of the month, and with a case on, it won't have any signal problems. Whatever phone you get just make sure it's right for you. With the long contracts the companies tie you down to you don't want a phone you'll get bored of after a few months.

I've got an HTC Desire and think it is brilliant. If you know where to look you can download 99% of apps for free and you are not tied into Itunes like you are with the Iphone. So you can manually install apps without using MarketPlace and copy mp3 music directly to it without Itunes or any other paid for service.
Many many opensource Android apps are out there to.

iPhone 4 all the way, i've had an iPhone from day 1 one and couldn't live without one. So simple and easy to use and does EVERYTHING with ease, no clutter and nonsense like you get with Android phones. As for the signal issues its all over hyped i've not had any problems with mine nor has any of my friends. Its good that everyone has one as you can use Face Time calling and other iphone to iphone apps.

Got the Nokia X6 on a really cheap contract including internet. Its got SatNav as well. The HTC Desire is a better gadget but why would I really want to pay double the amount per month?

not sure if this is true but I've heard that by overcharging phones (i.e overnight as many people do) the battery life is made worse. I've tried to only charge mine for the required amount since being told this and my old sony eriksson lasted for a week between charges, my current HTC wildfire easily does 2 days, which is better than some people say.
Not sure its definately corrrect as you'd have thought there would be some kind of sensor to stop charging when its full, but in my experience this seeems to help battery life.
