Just been looking on the Luton Outlaws forum and the one (only) good thing about it that I can see is that each post has an IP address showing.
Would that be an idea worth pursuing on here to keep a track of multi posters?

I for one would not post on here if I knew it would make my IP address so easily available (and crawlable by Google!)
There are backend tools to keep track of multiposters, or there should be, so it's a job to be done privately by administrators.

We mods have the possibility to view ip addresses if need be. And the reason you give for not showing them to the general public is very valid. Sorry Dr.Hitchens no can do but if you suspect a multi let us know and we'll look into it.

Most people don't have a fixed IP. Most broadband packages allocate you an IP via DHCP when you connect from a range that the ISP owns, so blocking a single IP will only block the person if by coincidence they have the same IP allocated again.

In my experience most people do have a fixed IP. Big (and annoying for admins) exception is AOL. They hand out a new IP to people at what appears to be a random time. On Grass Roots a good user got banned because AOL gave him the IP that had once been used by a spammer. Took a while to get that sorted out. So banning on IP must be done carefully, first checking when the IP was last used for spamming on StopForumSpam. Also block on email address if possible, username and internet hostname (this often gives a clue to the true location of the person but may be a proxy).

I was under the impression that most ISPs rotated IP addresses on a farily regular basis. I, for example, keep getting told whenever i access wikipedia that i am going to be banned, because someone (not me) using my IP address has been repeatedly vandalising pages on that website.
Obviously others have at times been allocated an IP address which is also sometimes allocated to me and have, while using that address, conducted acts of vandalism on wikipedia.
