www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-oxfordshire-11095882Seems completely unworkable to me. Half the parents can't afford an £80 fine let alone their 10-year-old kids. What happens if they don't pay? Can't imagine 11 year olds being locked up in young offenders for non-payment of fines

perhaps for offenders aged 10-14 father xmas could skip out their house this year and 15-17 year olds can pay

Seems fair enough to me. And why let them off the first offence? Everyone knows that it is wrong to drop litter, there is no excuse.
Get the kid to do community service picking up litter for a day if the parents can't pay the fine.

Or community service? They obviously tried that out last week - 4 kids from Wycombe dropped their crisp packet and were made stewards at the Oxford game!

No, its good. Here in HK almost no one litters as you can get a 1500HKD fine if you do. So even if you smoke, people will actively look for a bin.
But you have to have a lot of bins everywhere, on the streets here, they have them roughly every 50 metres.
And it works, and HK is relatively clean.

People throw fag butts on the floor mainly because there are no appropriate bins, now that the smoking ban is in place they should be on every street corner

Cheers. Yes a strong penalty would probably work. They should do the same for Drunk and disorderly behaviour. A fifty or eighty pound fine is nothing. It probably costs more in man hours to do all the admin that goes with it. Bump it up to £250 or even £400 - they won't do it as often then.

They should do the same for Drunk and disorderly behaviour. Totally agree The government has no problem taking money off people in fines for things like parking offences, but won't tackle what really matters. Guess its a lot easier to slap a fine notice on a parked car than confront a pissed up idiot.

Why does there seem to be a big litter problem at the moment?
When I was growing up, there was the "Keep Britain Tidy" campaign. I couldn't drop litter, but "kids today" seem to be happy to drop litter all over the place.
The recreation ground in Thame is a prime example, every morning the council send a man round to tidy up. Often the rubbish is within yards of the bins. Why don't they send the council round to fine the kids who drop the litter, rather than pick up after them?

There is no excuse for dropping litter. If your kids arent taught right from wrong its your fault. Fine them.
