Bizarre finish to the 20/20 final. Hampshire needed 1 run and Somerset 1 wicket off the final ball. To complicate matters one of the batsmen did his hamstring off the penultimate ball and had to call for a runner for the final ball. To add to the drama they had to call for the groundsman to come on with a pot of whitewash and paint some lines in the outfield for the runner.
Final ball was bowled and they scrambled a run but the actual batsmen had also run, on adrenalin I presume, as well as the runner so had Somersets dosy fielders twigged all they had to do was whip off the bails and run him out.
The umpires stood their ground for about 20 seconds to see if they clicked but all they were doing was back slapping and commisserating with eachother !
First prize was £200,000 and runner up got £50,000. £150,000 to a cricket club is massive money so a really c big cock up by Trescothick. He said it will haunt him for ever, given his mental state I hope he doesn't take it too personally. None of them seemed to know the rules ! Bizarre !
