He is a top, top prospect. Think it's a case of a questionable attitude though. Ability wise, miles above league 2.

Played very well tonight. I recon a contract could be going his way short term maybe!

How many midfielders do we actually need?
It's getting a bit mad, especailly if the new lad from Chelsea is really a midfielder not a striker (although he had a very good game tonight by all accounts).

I would have thought we either have enough players now or we have some on the books that are thought as not up to scratch. If this is the case we are they still with us? If not the case why are we still trialling players. No more game before Saturday.

I take it because Ben Gill the other rumoured trialist wasnt in the squad last night, that lee sawyer has replaced him as a possible midfield candidate we are looking at.
Highly rated prospect at previous clubs higher up the football pyramid. Seems strange if we are considering signing him because of the midfielders we already have, and the contracts that they are on.

Hells teeth, I'm really beginning to fail to understand what Wilder is playing at. The squad if anything now already has too many midfielders in it. It does not a huge depth of strikers. Phillishirk is another midfielder (who it seems Wilder is pretending is a striker, I hope he is right with this one).
My worries are still the front line and how many goals it has in it.
A new doubt is beginning to appear and that is Wilder will be tempted to mess with players like he did around Christmas. I hope to hell he has a midflield fixed in his mind that he is going to play for nearly every game, and we are not back to this different players every week.
The lesson we should have learnt last year is that stability is key.

And by continuing to use triallists in midfield you have wonder, is he? Looking at the backgrounds of Sawyer and Gill I can't really see that they would improve on what we already have.

Good point about stability. Utterly key. Wilder made a mistake lasts eason. Has he learnt from it?
On the point re midfielders, I must say I've been struggling. However, I think it's important to classify them as 'defensive' midfielders and 'attacking'
Defensive: Heslop, Bulman, Clist and, I guess Sawyer
Attacking: Hall, Barker, Deering, Philliskirk
To break it down further only 2 defensive midielders can play every week so having four would be pot on. I'm sure we all agree having to blokes for each position is ace
As for the 'attacking berth', well, in a 4-3-3, only one can play. So it would appear we're overstocked in this regard
If Deering and Philliskirk can really play in a front 3, and the jury's out, then I'm not too concerned
Can anyone recall the 4-5-1 set up when Wilder first arrived?

A Southend fan says that last season he was clearly a cut above League 1 in terms of ability but just had a poor attitude.

That's a strange thing to say. He's been successfully doing that since last season. Philliskirk we just don't know, but absolutely Deering can and seems to prefer to play there. I think we're ignoring the possibility of him changing formations as well. I don't know whether that'll happen, but it's a possibility.

Good point about the possibility of a change of formations.
I don't think we'll change from the 4-3-3 to often, although there will no doubt be some games, certainly away from home, where that could change to 4-5-1. This would be the obvious choice when the game is more of a battle, and it will still suit a lot of the players we have, essentially the wide forwards in the 3 man attack will drop back to be more conventional wingers. It would also allow someone from the middle to get forward and support the lone front man.
Of course that is all in THEORY, there's just as much chance that the front player becomes isolated and we hoof it into the channels...

well he's rated quite well on fifa 10. I think we have to remember bullys not young, I wonder how long he has left in him at league 2 standard. Sometimes a player is too good to let go to another league 2 team?
