Why do people even compare them to Man United? The gulf in class is huge, so it's kind of embarrassing.... pretty much equivalent to when people imply our national team is a competitor to Spain, Germany, Brazil etc.

I think people are overplaying this Barcelona side. Yes they are very good. Didn't win the CL last year though did they. Inter Milan showed they could be beaten, and arguably that treble-winning Inter team was a better team but you don't see people calling it the best team ever. Because they weren't demolishing teams week in week out by 4 or 5 goals. They had a great season but wern't together as a unit long enough to become a truly great side. Yes, they beat Barca in the CL final but I think 9 times out of 10 Barca would have won. But thats just it. Its the team rather than the individuals that makes Barcelona so good. The understanding between the core of the team is so great that the "lesser" players look world class. Yes, it will probably be only 2 or 3... I agree they have a way to go before the stats can back up claims of them being the best ever, but I've seen a hell of a lot of football in my time and I've never seen anything like this team.

Thats a much better argument than Juniors Man Utd '99. Similar to Barca in that they had a set system of playing and developed youngsters to fit into that system.
Certainly up there amongst the teams that we should be comparing this Barcelona side to.

Oh come on, Dwight York and Andy Cole being compared to Messi and Villa? what a joke. That 99 team didn't even win the league the previous season and the final was a smash and grab raid from the jaws of defeat in an otherwise boring final.
As for the Barca / Arsenal match I don't think it's a complete forgone conclusion. Arsenal's team is much stronger than last season and in good form and I don't agree that to beat them you need to stifle them. They seemed to struggle with Walcott's pace so it could be closer than some expect. Man Utd wouldn't fare any better with such a toothless attack

Thing I remember so much about that final is how the first 10-15mins were Man Uniteds.
Ronaldo raped them and Park missed a sitter.
Then like a minute later Eto'o showed us why he's such a brilliant striker and (imo) VDS should have done better.
That galvanised Barca and demoralised United.

Brazil 1970 were better than this Barcelona. They were the absolute ultimates in showboat football. Uncompromising defenders and razor sharp going forward. I agree with danny too about Ajax. That side that won the European Cup in 1971,or was it 1972, was a majestic team.
Personally I still think the Liverpool side under Paisley in the 70's was the best British side I've seen. Teams scoring a goal against Liverpool in those days made headlines. They had about eight players at the peak of their powers but, once again, had a few hatchet men to compliment the silky skill. It was a great side.
I think the best Man U side wasn't the '99 team but the one that started it all off back in the early 90's. The one containing Schmiecel, Irwin, Pallister, Bruce, Parker, Kancheslkis, Cantona, Ince, Hughes, Giggs, Sharpe etc.
But for me its Brazil 1970 all the way.

I'm surprised you consider a team of "showboaters" to be the best of all time.
Sure, it was a great team, but I'd put Ajax 90's, Liverpool 80's, Man Utd 90's, Milan 90s and Barcelona (current) above that side - I guess mainly because national sides never play together regularly enough to build up the understanding that makes truly great teams.
and if you could somehow actually transport a team through time and actually stage a match, that Brazil team would be torn apart by quite a few of todays teams I suspect, but thats not really fair and is a different debate altogether.

I think the current Spain team would beat the 1970 Brazil side. Even Spain's bench and reserves ooze class

I think the current Spain team would beat the 1970 Brazil side. Even Spain's bench and reserves ooze class Disagree. I think that's where Spain are lacking. Their first choice players are exceptional but their back up players aren't world class and if one or two of their first choice midfielders or strikers was injured they'd be ******.

Yes they'd have to play Fabregas then. And weall know you think they couldn't possibly be good if they had an Arsenal player on the team. And that Darren Fletcher is better. (he really showed his class against Spurs, didn't he?) But putting your anti-arsenal obsession to one side
I loved the swashbuckling Brazil 1970 team. But they'd get absolutely hammered by the Barcelona team. They couldn't hold their own against todays's (extremely drab by comparison) Man United team, let alone Barcelona. Vidic would know exactly how to foul them. rooney and berbatov would know how to get the penalties. The United team (let alone the barcelona team) are fitter, faster, more organised more scientific - and if we have 21st century referees Brazil would be lucky to have 9 men on the pitch.
It's like comparing an E-type Jag against a Porsche or a Ferrari. The e type Jag is the most beautiful car , maybe. But the Porsche will be more reliable, faster have better steeering and everything else.
And Barcelona have class and style and discipline as well as the magic that that Brazil team had. I don't think there's been a team to beat them in my lifetime. And I don't think there will be - for another year or two -at least until wilshere is in his twenties

What about the unbeaten Arsenal side of 03-04.
People will scoff but it had the likes of Henry, Viera, Bergkamp and Ashley Cole who were all world-class players, backed up with Campbell, Toure, Ljunberg, Gilberto Silva and Pires. A side who were very hard to beat
