Sorry, should've mentioned who I am on this thread. As YellowHoods said, I'm a reporter at the OM. I'm the court reporter but that means I cover the fans' cases (like the recent Vale and Shots ones). I'm also a season-ticket holder and lifelong Oxford supporter, so I often write the more general OUFC stories which go in the news section of the paper. I'll be writing something, with input from the FSF, once the current lot of court cases are finished (which could be a while I'm afraid).

I would be interested to know if it was TVP or HantsPlod who did the asking if you don't mind. Old Bill are usually quite restrained about that sort of thing at our place, usually just a bit of filming. Never seen anyone have their details taken. This could be the start of a new strategy from them, and if it is, then we need to know. Given the recent history between the clubs I would be surprised if TVP hadn't travelled to this match and this kind of behaviour would certainly be in keeping with their recent 'strategy' when policing OUFC matches.

Say he didn't give the details and the policeman somehow did everything in hi power to make him miss the game where does a fan stand then?
Presumably there is something that can be done, I'd want more than an apology for missing an away game though

Got told they had to leave the town center for no apparant reason and got the section # that says if they are found in the area they can be arrested. Anyway the lads all had tickets but had to leave town to avoid arrest, went to court and they all got something like £1000 compensation. Read that in an FSF newsletter I believe so maybe Amanda could shed some more light.

Thanks Thom. Delighted to know you're following this up. I think we've come to expect this from the authorities and so we tend not to defend ourselves as readily as we should. We let the growing creep take hold and assume that any sort of resistance to inappropriate authoritarianism will only see the authorities come down more heavily on us. As in the case above, the police use their extra knowledge combined with the power at their disposal to create a climate of fear. This poor chap now has his records taken, and will no doubt be put on a list of persons to be concerned about. Over the years they'll identify his picture, add that to the file, and add more pictures of him standing in pubs or at football. They may even capture him swearing at a referee. Then one day he can be in the wrong place at the wrong time, a fight breaks out in a pub which he has chosen to drink at, he gets rounded up, details taken, and bang, they see an easy conviction. In court, out come a whole host of details 'linking him' to football violence and disorder. And they can more easily ge ttheir conviction binding together their stories with colluded statements I would be very interested to know how many Oxford fans are currently considered to be on a watch list or potential trouble makers relative to our total crowds of about 6500 and relative to the genuine risk list of what I'd assume is probably only about 200. It wouldn't surprise me if the majority of regulars in both the East and North stand have their details or photos recorded on some level. Dr Otto is right with this....you do not have to give details, from what I know!!Why should you.. your crime is having a beer before a game...what a thug you are!

Back in 2009, Stoke supporters had stopped in a pub in Irlam, outside of Manchester, prior to their game v Man Utd. The police swooped, surrounded the pub, told all of the 80 odd supporters they weren't going to the game, but back to Stoke on a coach they'd organised due to fears that all the fans would become involved in alcohol related disorder. Thereafter all fans were made to give their names and addresses, made to board the coach and were not allowed off. As you can imagine, processing all the supporters took some time. Once all were on board, the coach then took them back to Stoke. Fans were not allowed off to use the toilets, resulting in their having to urinate in cups. The Stoke fans came to us for help, we referred the case to Liberty (the human rights group) who successfully sued Greater Manchester Police. Eventually some £200,000 in compensation was paid out. South Yorkshire police also missued Section 27 on Plymouth fans, and they too received compensation.

Good result there, but you se the catch 22 problem - we the taxpayers ended up forking out the £200.000 fine !!! The officers involved should be made accountable, if they know they are in the wrong they would be more 'reasonable' if they knew any later compensation would come from their pockets !!!

What a great idea! Here's how it might go - "You're young and within 3 miles of a football stadium - give me your mobile phone details, sonny."" But officer, you're not entitled to such information. I must protest!" "Good Lord, suddenly recalling my basic training I find that you are right! A million apologies!""No problem officer. Shall we say £200 compensation?" "Will you take a cheque?"

A cheque? you can't be serious. Who uses cheques these days. He would just ask for your bank details & have the £200 paid direct in to your account. It is the best way, I promise you. Give me your bank details & I'll prove it

re pending court cases be interested to know when people are advised to plead guilty and do they receive proper advice ....i noticed in recent OM reports some are going to trial..this needs to haapen more often and that TVP need to prove an offence has been committed not simply that someone is guilty of being young, loud and near a football match...!!
