To be fair, there is a process called filling in a Statutory Off Road Notification "SORN" form that removes this risk and, even according to the article a fine should be issued before any car is crushed. It's not people who want to store their beloved Morris Minor for a few years before is assumes classic status that have to worry.
The threat is targetted at people who drive around uninsured, often in cars without MOTs.
Seems a pretty reasonable measure to me.

seems like an excellent idea to me - all you have to do is fill out a SORN form if the car isn't being used after all......

I have a car that I am fixing up as a project which off the road... It is on a SORN, it's not difficult, they even send you a letter when your tax is due telling you how to do it. If you don't tough shit, enjoy your cube.

yep agree excellent idea
They aren't just going to crush your car without warning, they will send you a letter first to remind you to fill in the form, then threaten you with action. Anyone who can't or won't complete the necessary paperwork is either an idiot, doesn't have a driving license or they are an illegal immigrant. Can't see why anyone would be against this.

What I find disgusting is the high percentage of UK drivers who don't have tax, insurance or even a licence. These people need stamping on. SORN is one way of minimising abuse.
Bloody government! They'll be expecting us to pay our taxes next!

Can we get you crushed Danny C?
My brother sold his car for £60-00 to be scrapped recently and I saw it being driven in Reading just a week later

The reason for this is because there are a few tax-dodgers out there who drive to and from the shops uninsured, then when they get a knock on the door say "Oh I haven't driven it for years". I haven't seen a SORN form, but I am guessing there is a section on there for mileage of vehicle, and obviously if the figure you declared is different to what your car says then it's fairly clear the driver is telling porkies and has been driving it illegally, and it's crush time!

These tax dodgers are probably good-for-nothing immigrants so you should be in favour of this Danny. Crush the car, pack everything up in a crate and send it back to wherever it came from.

All you need to fill in a sorn is the registration, the date the sorn starts and the make and model of the car. All it is really is a way of saying "I didn't pay tax on the car because it's not being used" so that they know you didn't just not pay because you're dodging it and driving illegally. If they had to investigate every car with no tax to see if it was just off the road or not then they couldn't send out the automatic fines they do for failing to pay your tax as you could just say "oh it''s off the road so I didn't pay". It's also a way of trying to stop people scrapping bare shells of cars illegally as if you don't register the car as scrapped they send you a sorn renewal every year.

And the law is changing on how you notify that car has been scrapped too. On existing V5's you can tick a box on the log book to say it's been scrapped but all log books issued from August last year don;t have that option and you have to get a Certificate of Destruction from the scrappy (who have to be registered with DVLA to issue them) to prove that it has been scrapped.

If they came round and said to me 'You haven't got SORN" i'd say "No, but I have got a SORN off Shotgun, and I think this resolves the matter, don't you?"
