We have known this for 2 years at least!!! I know many people suspected that Smithy had recommended CW but I can't remember it being confirmed before.

Well the shortlisting and interviews were carried out by the new Chairman and Jim Smith the caretaker manager at the time. As Kelvin Thomas was new in the role and had limited if any knowledge of the game at the time, Jim Smith would have taken the lead.

I remember KT being quoted at the time of his appointment as saying that Jim Smith was instrumental in Wilder getting the job. Whether that was an initial reccomendation or whether it was just his advice following interviews with Wilder I'm not sure.

I think that Jim saw in CW something that reminded him of himself when he became a fledgling mananger. Seems to be a good decision by him and KT.

I think Jim remembered CW from the first game in conference when CW addressed him "Mr Smith"

That was Jim Smith's remit at the time wasn't it? He was an advisor
