I was playing on gt5 last night on my ps3 when boom it just turns itself off a yellow light appeared and then it falshed red untill I shut the power off.
I read that this is known as 'yellow light of death' and tried the quick fix in case it worked, remove all cables, remove the hard drive then (an old school blow to fix it for old times sake!) put it all back together and then pray it's fixed.
Turned it on this morning, lasted about 1min and the same thing happened.
Anyone have any experience of YLOD and if it can be resolved? Or is it a case of buying a new ps3?
FYI I purchased it in feb 2007 or 2008 and it the 40gb version and is out of warranty

I think Sony will fix the unit outside of the warranty but for a fee. No idea of price but would imagine it's cheaper than a new one and presumably includes a warranty extension. Best call Sony direct to check.
I've had mine for three years and a few mates have one as well and you're the first person I 'know' who's suffered from this so you've been very unlucky.
Post any fixes you may discover on here for future reference if you wouldn't mind...and good luck!
P.s get a logitech Driving force GT or g27 wheel for GT5. You'll never use a controller again!

Anyone wanna buy gt5 off me? Brand new been played once ... Why you selling Junior? I've got prologue and it did nothing for me personally and have read mixed reviews of GT5. Just interested if you are disappointed with it?

Couldn't get into it, only really have hit and run sessions on the ps3 and that's spent on FIFA or grand theft..
Only got it as it was part of a package when I got the ps3

Ouch, its like 250/1 to get YLOD isn't it?
Unlike the 1/3 for XBOX....
(sorry unnecessary swipe)
Normally covered anyway isn't it? Warranty or not?
I dunno search around

I don't think its as uncommon as you guys are suggesting.
It has happened (about a year ago to both) to four out of five people I know that had the original 60gb version. Of the three people i know who have the 40gb version I am the second it's happened to leaving just two 2007/2008 ps3 working out of a total of six.
Do you guys and your mates have newer models?

I have the oldest model. Only had 2 problems and just following instructions online meant it works perfectly again.
I know about 20people with it, only one of my mates had it and it then started workign randomly again and hasn't happened since.

I think have the 80gb model (been a while). It's certainly not PS2 compatible nor is it slim. Hasn't let me down...yet.

I have 60GB - fat and PS2 compatible.
I dropped it down 2 steps before. Only thing that broke was the front cover which slides on and off now!

I'm hoping that if i leave it for a while and go back to it it will have been healed by a miracle!
I'm missing it today as i usually only really play it whilst listening to Oxford games!

If it continues to happen and is a "known issue"as some people describe, give Sony UK a call.
Be polite, firm and fair even though its outside warranty. State you have done some research and understand its a "known" fault. State (or lie) that your are a Sony fan, you have a Sony Laptop, TV, etc. Also that you were thinking of getting a new Sony PS3, TV, etc for Mum, Dad, brother, friend, etc. If whoever you speak to refuses to help, again politely say you are disappointed, ask for the name or speak to the Customer Services Manager. Again, play on the brand loyalty and you wouldnt expect "something like this to happen to a quality brand product like Sony" and you might switch to other brands going forward.
Sony's usually have quite high margins and brand loyalty is important. Also I forgot to say, tell them what you want. Start with a free repair or a brand new one cause its a known issue or finally discount/voucher towards a new PS3.
Try the above and let me know how you get on.
