Most managers have a group they feel comfortable working with.

He was an OK keeper and may well be a half decent coach. Woody was also at Boro when Southgate was there.

Not a big fan of his at all. I can imagine him being a decent coach, but at Newcastle? Not so convinced about that...

Yes, but a decent coach closer to the level he played. It's difficult to imagine someone who spend most of their career in the lowest levels of league football being a good coach for a team in the highest level, particularly a team that might be looking for European qualification with a season or two.

He learnt to play at a good enough team. Why isn't Hodgkinson England goalie coach? Why is Ian Atkins now a coach at Sunderland? He managed crap teams and played for Shrewsbury, Birmingham and Ipswich!

I wonder what sort of salary a goalkeeping coach at a Premier League club would be on ? At a guess I'd say about £75,000-£100,000. If so then thats a pretty decent living considering a lot of these goalkeeping coaches seem to have been little more than journeymen footballers and would have earnt, relatively speaking, considerably less when they were actually playing.

Hodgkinson isn't england goalie coach because there are SO many ex-england goalkeepers that not all of them could make coaches. However, I would say that, having been a better goalkeeper than Woodman, Hodgkinson is more qualified to coach at a higher level. With regards to Atkins, Birmingham and Ipswich have been/are pretty high level teams. However, I think given time any player could become a top quality coach, but Woodman hasn't had the time, really. I'm very happy for him, as I am for any ex-oxford player (at least that I didn't hate at the time) but I'm not convinced that he would be a good coach at Premiership level. Yet, at least.

Why do you have to have been a great player to be a great coach? The two jobs are totally different.

I think with time you could be, but it just strikes me as weird that someone who played in the 4th tier could go on so quickly to coach in the 1st tier.
