They each have their own allure. The smell of steam is the best while they noise of diesel is good. :-)

They sounded like they couldn't take up their that power I always thought. Class 50's are great. Used to be a regular at Oxford

You could find class 50 from East Anglia and from Penzance, so widely used.

er..this is the STEAM TRAIN THREAD....could we have some steam on here to redress the balance. Hall or County Class would be nice - I would settle for a GWR Pannier tank engine if pushed!

Had that on my train set as a kid. Trouble going round tight bends. Bit like one of my specials after a barbecue.......

Had that on my train set as a kid. Trouble going round tight bends. Bit like one of my specials after a barbecue....... Went the ELR steam gala a few years back. There was a 9F and a Black Five double headed powering out of the station. Wanton wheel spin and hammer-blow, probably a disaster for the permanent way. Beautiful for the spectator though!

Anyone seen Tornado live? She went through my local station (Warwick) last summer actually. I nipped out of the pub next to the station to take a peek.

Anyone seen Tornado live? Yep - whilst waiting at Kidderminster station sometime last year. Tornado was at the Severn Valley Railway. I think this is my fave:
