I'm no trainspotter, but I do love the look, sound and smells of steam trains.
Always enjoy travelling on them. Last one was the North Yorks Moors line from Pickering to Grosmont this year.
I'm old enough to remember standing on the bridge over the Waterloo-Portsmouth line at West Byfleet station in Surrey as a steam train passed underneath. (I was VERY young!)

CB, have you got any photos of the "Western" class diesel-hydrolic locos? Magnificent machines, they always sounded soooo powerful, more so than the diesel-electrics.

The only bad thing about Westerns is they were built in S*****n. For me, the best sound is the sound of a Class 37. Sounds like a tractor.

Thanks CB, really loved those engines. Never got to ride in the cab though. Did ride in an old Warship class and one of those copies from the German V200 series.

Diesels are cool too, particularly class 37 which ran the London to Norwich line when i was a kid and class 55 Deltics on the east coast main line.

There is a station on the commuter bit of the east coast mainline called Hadley Wood in north London, just before the M25. As a kid I used to sit on the non stopping platform track watching Deltics thundering through at 100 mph with 11 coaches behind. It used to shake the platform. The intercity 125 class 43 were never the same when they were introduced. Anyone know when that would have been?

Does anyone know the route from Paignton to Dartmouth. 0-6-0 hauled steam with the old south Devon countryside as a backdrop..... I'm sure I remember us trying that formation under Talbot....

I have also been thinking about the class 91 intercity 225 and what a bore they are.

Does anyone know the route from Paignton to Dartmouth. 0-6-0 hauled steam with the old south Devon countryside as a backdrop..... Agreed. But it doesn't go to Dartmouth - never did as they couldn't cross the River Dart so Dartmouth has a station building that has never had a train go to it! Change at Kingswear for the ferry. If you're in the area (especially if you have kids) I would thoroughly recommend the round robin trip on train boat and open top bus. Great scenery all the way (except the middle of Paignton!)

I am quite aware that Dartmouth is on the other side of the river thank you. ;D

Just after Christmas, the 1970's HST will be running from Paddington via Bicester to Banbury and reversing down towards Oxford to avoid the complete shut down of Reading station. Just to let you all know!
However, HST aren't what they used to be ever since they changed the Valenta engines to MTU's.
