To ease a bit of pressure on the car parks around the stadium has anybody thought of approaching nearby schools to see if they can be used? I understand this is common practice at some of the bigger grounds. Is it Henry Newman school in Littlemore which is just a few minutes walk from the overflow car park? For a few quid per car would be a nice little earner for the school I'd have thought and a fair bit quicker to get on to the ring road too.

I will bring this up at our next committee meeting. Do you feel parking is a real issue? As I've often arrived at the ground with minutes to spare and found a space in the overflow car park. The problem as i see it is the long queues after the match.

I suggested exactly that on TIU some time ago and the issue was brought up at one of the Oxvox member meetings with KT (start of last season I think) and he felt that it was not worth investing the time for a problem that may occur a few times a season.
It will definitely become more of an issue as our gates grow and it looks like it will be an issue on 28th December which may not encourage all of the extra fans to come back regularly.
At the last game I noticed that there were a lot of cars queing past the cinema at kick off then appearing to struggle to find a place in the overflow car park. I also saw quite a few people walking over from that direction up to 20minutes later.
I would be willing to have a go at liaising with local schools to see if anything can be done. Mark if your colleagues feel that it is an issue worth pursuing let me know.

Thanks for the reply Mark. I don't think it's a big issue yet but as scoob rightly says as the crowds grow it would help to have a few options and some people are put off by having to battle their way out of the car park. I know that I avoid the car parks altogether unless I'm there at least an hour before kick off as I don't like getting stuck in the overflow. A bit of a traditionalist I guess in that I'd rather walk for a bit to the car and get easier access to the ring road too but even that's difficult if you're pushed for time. Interestingly I noted that the Bridle threads mentioned buses from outlying towns. I think the last time this was tried the crowds were well down compared with now .... is this worth another look at too? Plenty of kids in Witney with an interest but if their folks don't take them they don't get to go to the games.

The Science Park has a multi storey car park. Surely they can open it up and charge £2 a car?

The Science Park has a multi storey car park. Surely they can open it up and charge £2 a car? I believe that Kassam tried to persuade the owners of the Science Park to allow parking on their land but they refused. Of course we do not know what Kassam's method of persuasion was. I am sure someone from the club or Oxvox said that many of the companies on the Science Park have employees who need access to parking 24/7 so this was one of the reasons for not allowing it. It may be possible to approach again but the Uni does not seem at all interested in getting involved with OUFC. I also know for a fact that he was trying to persuade the owners of Priory Road (ie the lane under the railway bridge behind the priory) to allow traffic to use their road for entry/exit from the Car Parks but they were having none of it.

Kassam was probably rude to them.

Witneyoxon is it Northfield School that you were talking about? This is the one just the other of the stream behind the North Stand. There is a footpath leading from the school gate to the area between the North and East Stands and can't be more than a couple of minute walk. Spying on it on Google Maps it appears that there is plenty of hard standing for 200 cars maybe but access may be limited.
The club already has links with Peers School and that can't be more than 10 minutes walk from the ground plus it appears to have access to the Eastern Bypass via Sandy Lane West thereby avoiding the worst of the congestion around the stadium.

No it wasn't Northfield but that's a good shout as it's even closer and likewise Peers. The one I was referring to is John Henry Newman School which is just off St Nicholas Rd in Littlemore. To be honest any of these would offer a quicker getaway onto the ring road than the other car parks.

The British Legion is closer to the Kass Stad than John Henry Newman School and is open for Oxford fans on Saturdays and is just off St Nicholas Rd.

I am lucky to be able to park about half way to that school and there is virtually no traffic after games. A couple of minutes to the bypass and away. I am often home (60 miles) within an hour which is probably not much after some fans get out of the Kastad Car Parks especially for popular matches. So there are at least three schools very close that could be approached and they probably have at least as much hard standing as the overflow car park between them.

Something needs to be done about the 28th.
I can see many people who are not used to going to the kassam (or going when the crowd is not particularly big), not getting in on time. It may well put off the casual supporter.
The car park will be full well before 3PM and where will the rest of the cars park? A problem waiting to happen and I suspect that nothing will be done about it.

Why can't we negotiate the use of the BMW car park... if club stewards operate it and Ox Bus Company picks up and drops off for £2 return lots of fans would use it and congestion would ease.
Surely BMW would like a bit more positive local press... offer them a few splash adverts around the place - job done

Do you really think Ox Bus Co would do this for £2 and how many buses will be needed to take 2000 fans back to the car park?

We discussed this issue at our committee meeting as promised. Apparently this avenue has been explored before. The school is a special needs school and often has classes on Saturdays. We did agree that parking can be an issue at big games so we intend to email the club ahead of the Macclesfield game to find out what plans are in place to manage traffic at the game.
Hope this answers some of your questions and provides sensible follow-up approach.

Invariably at home games theres a lot of members of TVP 'in the area' - maybe a bit of traffic control instead of intimidatory and confrontational 'policing' might be the way forward ?
