We met Northampton in the 2nd round of the FA Cup having smashed non-league Dorchester 9-1 in the 1st round, but having lost in our last game, a 2-1 home defeat to Colchester United in the Auto Windscreens Trophy. However, despite that blip the home form was good and a second home defeat to lower league opposition was unexpected. Fortunately, Oxford had learnt their lesson from the weekend and despite being matched for most of the game, were able to make their superior league standing tell, with a goal in each half, first from a Stuart Massey header and then second from Paul Moody, who struck into the top corner from the edge of the area.

Rather unlike a typical performance from an Ian Atkins team this was an emphatic win with lots of goals, albeit against a poor Northampton side freshly relegated from the Second Division the previous season. We had made a strong start to the season (despite playing awful football), going unbeaten for the first 9 games of the season, before back to back defeats against Doncaster and then Reading in the League Cup, placing extra importance on this match against Atkins' old side (where he had won promotion via the playoffs in 1997) in order to regain some momentum. A goal from Steve Basham in the first minute got things rolling and he added a second before the break. The second half continued with the first half theme of Oxford dominance, though the score remained 2-0 until Oxford won a free kick 25 yards out, which was struck beautifully by Dean Whitehead (featured in the video above) to make the score 3-0 and cap off a good day for Oxford.
