A tough opening month of the season had seen us win just one of our matches (an emphatic 5-0 home victory over Southend) before this match and we travelled to Port Vale with a need to get some points on the board. A poor performance against a Port Vale side who were still looking for their first win of the season saw us go down 2-0 and never looked like getting anything from the match to leave us sitting on just 3 points with the season a month old.

Our second trip of the season to Port Vale came in the League Cup, having been beaten 2-0 at the end of August. We had progressed to the third round having beaten Norwich City in the first round and Premiership Sheffield Wednesday in the second round, both being played over two legs. After the glory of beating Premiership opposition in the previous round this match was a considerably more low-key affair as two average teams played out a goalless draw. The match did, however, have its chances, though neither side was clinical enough to finish them. That we would be unable to find the net was hardly surprising, as we had failed to score in our previous 4 matches, but to keep a clean sheet away from home was a good result to take into the replay at the Manor.

Two first half goals from Nigel Jemson proved to be the difference between the two sides in this League Cup replay, setting up a fourth round tie with Premiership Southampton. Like in the first match there were plenty of chances in a very open and attacking game, and it was only a stirling performance from Phil Whitehead in goal that prevented Port Vale from scoring, pulling off a number of stunning saves. The victory and upcoming match against Premiership opposition proved to be a welcome distraction from the league in a season where much of the time we were scrapping for points at the wrong end of the table.

The fourth meeting of the season between these two sides came towards the end of the season with port Vale sitting pretty in the playoff positions and with Oxford now safe from relegation in 16th and with nothing to play for. It came as little surprise then that a Port Vale side who were fighting for a coveted place in the playoffs to reach the Premier League were the better side, while we seemed to be less up for it and as a result on the back foot for much of the match. Port Vale took a 1-0 lead into the break and after a silly sending off for Darren Purse, who took issue with a challenge he had received and so delivered an elbow in the face in retaliation, Port Vale went on to double their lead in the second half to take all the points.

Struggling in the league and going into the match on a run of awful form (8 games without a win) there had been little reason for optimism going into this match against a solid Port Vale side. However it wasn't long before Joey Beauchamp latched on to a through ball and finished cooly to open the scoring and put United on the front foot. In the second half Jemson scored the second from a Beauchamp cross to give Oxford a win after a surprisingly dominant performance in which we created chance after chance and should have won by more.

We travelled up to Port Vale with renewed vigour under Malcolm Shotton having won 4 of our last 5 games, but were let down by a poor performance against a Port Vale side who were scrapping for points at the wrong end of the table. Calamitous defending led to us conceding three times and that was enough to condemn us to a 3-0 defeat.
