Out of interest, do you work for Network Rail?
It's a bit more of a difficult journey from Oxford however. Change at Birmingham and Nottingham I think.

I reckon it could be good to make a day of it and perhaps stay in a hotel. Any ideas where?

Out of interest, do you work for Network Rail? No. With Cross Country trains you can sign up to be emailed when advance tickets go on sale for a certain date and journey. I then check on the East Coast mainline website (which is often handier for me going into London) as tickets on that route to Doncaster, Crewe etc can be much cheaper, although the cheapest advance fares at reasonable times can get snapped up. If you register to receive email updates and offers from them (East Coast), occasionally they do 1/3 off the advance prices too. Groupsave is often cheaper for 4 people on the standard fares, but I understand are not guaranteed to be available on the day. Also a £20 (for the year) network card covers much of the South East and gets 1/3 off off-peak fares, so it can work out better to split a journey to the boundary (such as Worcester). Anyway, some people have found these threads useful, so any other tips (such as the £1 Oxford-Paddington fares) always appreciated.

Sounds like something I might look into.
I've always found buying two singles can be also work out cheaper. Especially when going to London - I got down to the West Ham game for £15 from Leamington Spa.
