The trainline website states that a return is £18.50, it's not clear to me if that is an advance fair only or if it costs that on the day can anyone help?

Looks like that is OFF PEAK DAY RETURN for £18.60 (Oxford to Hereford) So you can travel any time on the Saturday, have to go back the same day.

Just booked and paid £18.60 via Great Western - seems to get more expensive the longer you leave it

Just checked with gwr and they are showing the train tickets as £35 return

If four of you book together you get the four of you for £37.20 return with national rail.

If you've got a network card it is slightly cheaper to do the day return with network card Oxford-Worcester for £9.55, then day return Worcester-Hereford for £7.90 = total £17.45.
(Worcester is on the boundary of the network card)
Obviously the 4 person groupsave is cheaper still per person
