Six games into our first Conference season and unbeaten, having dropped just 2 points, we made the long journey north to Morecambe whose season had yet to really take off, though we had been forewarned to expect a tough match against a strong, hard-working and well-organised side. In reality, it turned out to be a routine victory and a perfect away performance. We took the lead after 22 minutes with a goal from Steve Basham that was the very definition of 'route 1' and this was followed up 11 minutes later by a headed goal from Phil Gilchrist. The first half also saw a blatant penalty turned down for a foul on Marvin Robinson, though the referee decided to atone for his mistake early in the second half by awarding Oxford a soft penalty, which was then missed by Basham. We soaked up a lot of pressure in the second half without ever looking too troubled and then nicked a third in injury time, a beautiful shot from Andy Burgess.

Later in the same season and a turnaround in fortunes of the two clubs had taken place, with Oxford unable to buy a win, having just been knocked off the top of the table on New Year's Day, and a strong Morecambe side sitting just outside the playoffs. It was perhaps lucky then that Morecambe, who had the best away record in the Conference and looked by far more likely to score, were unable to punish a disheartened Oxford side lacking in creativity that were booed off the pitch at half time and after the final whistle.
