West Ham were flying high in the league and came into the match on the back of 3 consecutive victories and unbeaten all season, having beaten us a few weeks before in the league. In contrast, our form going into the match was indifferent, so when we conceded early in the match it seemed like a cup exit was soon to follow. However, league form matters little in cup matches and with the home crowd behind us began to pile on the pressure to quickly equalise. At 1-1 we even had time to miss a penalty! However, as the match wore on West Ham gradually got more into the game and created a number of chances themselves, but it was to be Oxford's day after all as Paul Simpson mazed through the West Ham defence to set up Jim Magilton's first goal for the club and hand the Hammers their first defeat of the season. The victory earned a 4th round tie at home to Chelsea.

In a repeat of our earlier Laegue Cup meeting at the Manor, we again ran out 2-1 victors over table-topping West Ham. After taking an early lead through Paul Simpson, which was extended through John Durnin early in the second half, we then contrived to hand West Ham a lifeline in typical Oxford style, but fortunately were able to hang on for the three points, to extend our unbeaten run to 5 games.

Coming into the match on a 7 game unbeaten streak, hopes were understandably high going into this match. Things started brightly enough, as John Durnin, after netting 4 against Luton the previous Saturday, scored the opener. However, the lead didn't last long and after equalising, West Ham began to run rampant against a weak Oxford defence, scoring 4 to effectively kill the match. However, we showed plenty of spirit and rallied to get 2 goals (including a spectacular shot from Magilton) to bring it back to 4-3 but were killed off late on with a fifth for West Ham, the second time in a matter of weeks we had conceded 5.

After a disastrous campaign post-Christmas, things looked bleak going into this match against second placed West Ham. 6 games without a win had left us just 4 points clear of the relegation zone. The match itself was scrappy and heated, but we somehow managed to pull a victory out of the bag against the odds with a late goal from Andy Melville to send the London Road into raptures and clench a vital 3 points.
