Northampton away was my very first OUFC away game, back in 1976 I think. We lost 1-0 and there was a load of trouble I remember. I am fairly certain that night on Match of The Day Jimmy Hill said something along the lines of "Today Oxford United fans caused the worst trouble seen so far this season when they tipped a burger van over". Does anyone else remember this or is my mind playing tricks on me?? Previously on this thread, there's been plenty of mentions about the 'famous' Swindon away game regarding what happened when the smoke bomb descended on Roy Burton and Swindon scored. Inside the ground - yes, something else. Northampton away 1976. Inside the ground - the great big bluddy fence being demolished was near to the 'Swindon' incident. What people seem to forget, was the pandemonium that went on outside. All I call recall, is the sight of mini-gangs of Oxford loons running in every direction. NOT away from Northampton fans - they were being chased everywhere! If you can imagine that Pacman thing chasing everything on the screen, then you will get an idea. But, I certainly don't remember a hotdog van being tipped over. Surely, we'd have talked about that for years?

I remember the fence going over , I think it was separating fans just about on the half way line, with Northants cricket ground on the opposite side. Your description outside the ground is very accurate Cuddy.

I thought the fence was at the side of that big open terrace at the end. I remember climbing over the fence to walk around to the side after the main thrust of Oxford fans had kindly cleared the way.
After the game I can remember waiting for the coach when around a dozen or so Oxford fans suddenly ran off. A few minutes later they all returned carrying a bunch of Northampton scarves.

There was a good photo of fence incident in the oxford journal,a geezer called John Cook who i knew got nicked that day and was pictured hanging over the fence, the fence collapsed if i remember rightly ;D

Your description outside the ground is very accurate Cuddy. As someone who was around in the days of yesteryob, I've seen many away games with a handy-sized Oxford yob mob. I've seen cars turned upside down (allegedly by Oxford fans), Windows kicked in (again, allegedly by Oxford hoolies), trains trashed (allegedly again), grounds partly demolished (you know whatedly), opposing fans screaming for their life (f*ck it!), horses raped and women ridden (yes, in that order!). The most violent I've ever allegedly witnessed? Northampton away in 1976. Pure malice.

Met your bro Pete today, Dave. He's on the same FA Coaching course as me. Had a good old natter with him. And I made it to the game afterwards because we finished early!

You poor thing, Boris! He's the posh one of the family! I was (and still am) the black sheep of my family. In fact, a whole flock of sheep!

My two sons led the teams out today, with my eldest, Tommy, holding the 12th man flag. In true Calamity-Cudd tradition, he broke the bluddy flagpole! Yep! The apple don't fall too far away from the f*cking tree, does it!

If a story is worth mentioning, it's sometimes worth mentioning twice. So, for that reason, I'll just say look at the Tess Sullivan thread!

Did anything strike you odd about the Northampton fans yesterday? Was it me, or did they hardly sing? They certainly were a well-behaved bunch (over 800 of 'em) of supporters, which was refreshing to see.

My sister's old boyfriend used to live in Northampton in the '60s and '70s. I remember him telling me that they had a large 'Hell's Angels' chapter in Northampton. One year, early '70s, Everton went to Northampton and their fans were 'sorted out' by the 'Angels', according to my sister's ex. Can anyone confirm the existence of these 'Angels', please? Cant confirm this, but I remember the Battle of Fortes with The Gypsy Jokers (HAs). Not sure of the year, but poss 70 or 71, when the road from Pear Tree to the by-pass was being turned into a dual carriageway. All the pubs in the city centre emptied when word got out that they were at Fortes (about 10pm) and within a very short time the roadworks turned into a battlefield, with anything you could get your hands on was used by bothsides (including shovels, picks and barbed wire. Absolutely allegedly, of course !!!

All very interesting threads..though does tend to glory hunt on the Oxford side...no mention of the Milk Cup game in 85/86..when small number of Northampton blacks if I remember got in your end/side to London Rd end..do remember having a good chat with your firm back in about 92ish..they were in the Rocket pub outside Coventry station on way to Wolves...recounting stories of the two legged affair..couple of coaches getting bricked at Npton..and âccording to some Oxford, some Northampton geezer opening his coat to reveal large knives..and Oxford jumping off garrages in the side alleys around County Ground onto unsuspecting Cobblers fans! ;D Don't know how true all was..do remember Oxford brought a few lads to return though R&R

np. Funny enough, Northampton Town is one of those clubs where I haven't got a bad word to say about them. As far as us glorifying Oxford fans' exploits, good or bad, er, it's an Oxford site, so, er, we would, wouldn't we!

I didn't start there until 1969. if you're who I think you are, you would be about 4 or 5 years older than me. And if you ARE the chap, you were regarded as the 'leader' of the London Road once, yes? (It's ok, there's no joke coming!)
