McLaren is a great shout - a tough midfielder who breaks up play who can also pass very well.

Why are some people only hoping to sign MacLean until the end of the season? We need to sign him on a decent contract. If the club can manage a deal until June 2011 then why not tie him down for longer? Because, presumably, MacLean is on a Championship wage. In fact, he cost Plymouth half a million two years ago so it's likely to be a fairly hefty Championship wage. I still think that if the bloke is happy to sign a 6 month deal with wages he is happy with, then we should be confident enough to sign him for 18 months. Oxford are paying a proportion of his wages but Oxford, due to FL rules, have to pay Plymouth and Plymouth then pay MacLean. Needless to say, he hasn't been paid. We can assume he is a wealthy man having plyed his trade at a very good level, so perhaps a regular income is more important than no income at all. I still am confident we will sign him but until the end of the season when chances are he will move onto better things.

Think most people are on the same page. My 5 point list is; 1) Sign Maclean. 2) Stability at centre back: A regular partner alongside Wright, with one (preferably two) understudies. Not sure which role Worley is. With Franks returning to Huddersfield, Creighton not coming back and Gaughan signed short-term, 'the future could be Futcher' (sorry ;D), but I'd prefer somebody else. 3) Out: Creighton, Deering (both cancelled by mutual consent according to FA Player Registrations Lists), Day, Midson and Cole? Bottom line - never keep a player the manger doesn’t want. 4) In: Should be capacity if all the above can be offloaded. An experienced midfielder is a priority - Paul McLaren? (ex-Tranmere). Would love a left winger. Finally; 5) Blood some youngsters if we drift to mid-table obscurity – yes an anxiety free end to the season. I have heard of other clubs having them Full marks with that one sonny jim!

Heslop, McLaren and Clist/Payne is a very decent midfield three and with Potter supporting Maclean and Constable we have on paper a lot of attacking options.
McLaren will definitely sit in front of the back four in that holding role.

1) Steve MacClean. Unlikely, but we can dream. If we can't afford him (even as a loan for the rest of the year) then another experienced football league striker please. 2) Defensive midfielder. Has Wotton gone back to Soton? Fine if he has - he was only average. But we do need a battler and destroyer in our midfield three. I think Payne is a very good player - but I don't think that's his role. 3) Another CB.....or two if Futcher doesn't stay. Worley is great. Wright is awesome if he can stay fit. We need two others there as cover, however, and that we don't have........ Get each of those, and I think we can make a playoff run. Tick, tick, tick. Playoffs, here we come. ;D

or maybe even automatic promotion.... who knows? its not far out of reach now.
either way, the thing I am enjoying is that there is no fear of failure like last season. If we don't make it, it doesn't matter, we can have another go next season.

We may well have left it too late for automatic and Gillingham v Oxford in the final even if it is at Old Shatford would be good for finances. I hope we can make it this year but we will be very up for it next season if we miss out this year
