A good match report should read well for whoever reads it. Therefore constantly referring to Constable as "Beano" is weak journalism.

No way is anybody - Chris Williams or otherwise - assisting with the "transition". What the hell is going on?

No way is anybody - Chris Williams or otherwise - assisting with the "transition". What the hell is going on? Today's program was not up to it's normal standard by a long chalk. It had 66 pages today compared to the usual 84 page effort but the price was the same. Returning to the official web site updates which have been sparse to say the least I don't believe I have seen anything about Baker and Franks leaving nor the situation with Wotton and nothing about Aldershot being all ticket. I apologize if I am wrong. I don't want to blame the new young lad who appears to have been thrown into a difficult situation but allowing C Williams to leave without seemingly serving a notice period and having no natural replacement seems folly to me. The club's main 'branding assets' i.e program and web site communications are hugely important and have to be professionally and competently maintained.

In fairness, if you read the Macclesfield equivalent, our website reads quite a lot better. We know the name of their players, I didn't see any spelling or grammer mistakes, compared to two for Macclesfield, and ours seems a lot less biased. Just a small pity the result away to Macclesfield should have read 3-2 rather than 2-1, but other than that I thought it was pretty good...

Chris Williams was the head of the department and had a guy called Ryan Bird working beside him. Both of them seem to have left on the same day and now it's obvious that neither of them is involved at all with any sort of handover or transitional period. Whatever happened must have been pretty big for this situation to have occurred. Putting aside whatever did actually happen to cause this, the fact of the matter is that things need to be fixed and quickly. I appreciate that things are clearly difficult at the moment but despite the best efforts and intentions of those currently holding down the fort the service is pretty awful at present. As far as I'm concerned this is an example of terrible management because not only have both members of a department been seemingly driven to walking out on the spot on the same day, there was clearly no structure or Plan B in place just in case something like this ever happened.

It's a "sh!t programme" and a "poxy website" according to some people, while others will feel the same as you (including me!). Its importance will vary from person to person I suppose. In all honesty I've just looked at the site and several things spring to mind: 1. The match report picture should have been a celebration shot from one of the goals. The first goal celebration seemed to last ages so chances are that there's at least one really good shot of that in there. If so then that shot should in turn be kept for a future programme cover. 2. Videos should have been filmed with Wilder and Heslop after the game, and if possible additional videos with Craddock and Midson as that then bridges the gap between today and Saturday: Craddock being suspended for today and therefore looking to get back into the team on Saturday and Midson now being back from his loan spell with none other than Saturday's opponents. That way the Wilder and Heslop videos could be uploaded ASAP and Midson and Craddock's videos could be spread out between tomorrow and Friday. 3. Due to the short amount of time between today's game and Saturday, a story should have been left as the main headline overnight once the post-match "buzz" had eased off regarding the Southend fixture. This is particularly important because of the prize draw stuff going on for people who attend both today's and Saturday's games, and also because there is rarely a better time to try and flog tickets than right after a third consecutive victory. However while it may be easy for me to say these things the reality is that for those currently in charge such points won't seem obvious or perhaps even important. People like Dan are doing everything that they can and while I can see that the standards have slipped in some cases that's only to be expected given the circumstances. Someone new will likely be appointed in the first week of 2011 and once they've had time to bed in I'm sure that things will be back on track. Keep the faith.

Interesting insight Ryan into the lack of coverage since you and Chris departed. I am really sorry that you both have left, you both clearly did a wonderful job and I wanted to say thanks.
If you speak with Chris, I know many people would like our thanks passed onto him also.

TallRob the situation with Yellow Player is becomming cringeworthy. I subscribe to that and in the past, it has been good, it has shown numerous videos of both management and player interviews.
Recently, it has just replicated the same news stories which any person can read on the official website and in the last week has only had two club videos uploaded. Nothing extra to justify the subscription (one of Wilder before Stevenage and one of some scruffy oik who needs a haircut talking about Macc Town). The FL automatically put the TV highlights on it.
For £35 per season, it is now verging on robbery. I may call Trading Standards.

In terms of the match reports and news articles, it just needs someone with a good grasp of English language to proof-read them as this will iron out any grammar and spelling mistakes. Chris and/or Ryan are clearly quite proficient in English as their articles always read very well. But that's only one small part of it, and clearly the "media" section of the club is currently understaffed and underqualified. We'll just have to sit back and wait for new people to come in, as "young Dan" isn't going to pick things up within a matter of a few days, no matter how hard he tries. And this isn't a dig at Dan, he's obviously doing the best he can in the difficult position he's been forced into.
It would be nice to know what really happened, though I doubt we'll find out for a long while.

Yellow Player is something that Chris and I felt very passionately about and is a service that I personally believe has massive potential. Over the last six months we virtually doubled the number of subscribers, though there is no doubting that the online commentary of games being made exclusive to the service played a part in that increase. None the less, I felt that this was a massive opportunity to improve the overall quality of the service. It's no use assuming that people will be happy simply because they can hear games; we wanted to give supporters a service and quality of content that they would really feel justified the cost. Unfortunately there are a number of obstacles regarding Player that are somewhat limiting. One is that any interview longer than two minutes in duration takes a LONG time to upload. A four or five minute interview can take around two hours to upload, which aside from being a bit of a pain also means that you're limited in the work that you can do while the upload is going on. Every piece of footage is edited using Windows Live Movie Maker, which is a very basic bit of software that comes standard on any Windows computer or laptop. Because of this the file sizes are rather large which is part of the reason that upload times are so massive. Virtually every other club with a Player service has proper editing software such as Adobe Premier Pro. We did look into this although the price tag meant that we were unable to secure it, though believe me when I say that we did fight for it on several occasions. Another big problem that we had which people frequently commented on was the occasional issue regarding sound quality. This was a major headache because all videos are filmed on a Flip camcorder, which is essentially a handheld device no bigger than a mobile phone. Because of how basic the camera is there was no way that we could attach an external mic or devise any kind of wind protection, meaning that every single open air interview ran the risk of being disrupted by even the slightest of breezes. One gust of wind meant that we were left with an occasionally deafening roar over the top of the audio, meaning that for the past few months we were having to carry out interviews in doorways at the training ground just to make sure that they were listenable. Arguably the biggest issue we had to overcome was the time that we genuinely felt needed to be dedicated to the filming and editing of videos. One thing that we really wanted to do this season was make sure that programme, website and Player content was kept as exclusive as possible to ensure maximum value for money for every supporter. We didn't want to put a video on Player, type the majority of it up to use for a web story and then use the same text for an interview in the programme, because we felt that this would not give people true value for money. Unfortunately the players are very rarely at the stadium besides match days so if you want to get content for Player (or any service for that matter) you've got to drive 20 miles each way to the training ground. It became increasingly difficult to secure this time out of the office for various reasons as time wore on, so I have a lot of sympathy for people who are having to try and keep things fresh at the moment. What I will say is that, despite the numerous problems that seriously need to be addressed in the future, I think Player is a potentially fantastic service and I would encourage any of you with subscriptions to stick with it. With the right backing from the club and the right person in the driving seat I know that it can go from strength to strength over the months and seasons to come, and it is a great source of revenue for the club. I appreciate that you need to feel you're being given value for money because at the end of the day you are a customer, and any customer of any business should be looked after. After all it's potentially easy for people to lose sight of that at times because the relationship between a club and its supporters is so unique and full of passion, dedication and a very real love - nothing like the experience shared when you're buying a microwave from Comet! My suggestion would be to email the club with any suggestions or qualms you may have regarding Player, but once you've done that allow them time to get things into gear and begin moving forward. Player is just one area of the job that anybody new will take time to get to grips with, let alone spruce up. Stay patient and give them time to sort things out. It's up to them to improve the service and I am sure that they will do exactly that.
