It depends where you're putting the centre ground. You thought New Labour weren't lefties! ;-) well economically they weren't! The problem with the terms left and right wing is that someone can hold left wing views on one thing and right on another, yet we always try to label people (or parties) as one or the other having thought about it, I'll concede that the BBC leans to the left on a lot of issues

Another issue which has been overlooked is that if the BBC was forced to seek commercial funding we would have more advert breaks across the board. Because we have a major broadcaster that doesn't show adverts we're less accustomed to break after break after break in the middle of our shows, and the ones we do have on commercial TV are still complained about anyway. Compare this to a country like America where people just assume that all channels are half programme half 'commercials' (if you're lucky) and you'll see how comparatively little we have on our own commercial channels. Without the licence fee we'd have 5 minutes of adverts after the opening credits, then every 5 minutes during the show (including immediately before the closing credits - which is why so many American shows show their credits over the final scene of the programme, to force you to sit throught the adverts). When watching football we'd be interrupted by adverts every time the ball goes out for a throw in!

Good point yellowbrains
I think a lot of people don't appreciate the quality of our TV compared to any other country. Theres not many things these days that we do better than everyone else, but this is one - and the BBC is a big part of that.
