£18 million, potentially rising to £24 million. Absolutely mental fee.
Sunderland must be very confident of being able to sign Welbeck on a permanent if they are willing to let their main source of goals leave. That said, you could sign a good replacement from elsewhere with £18 million.
Interesting to see if the fee is offset by the sale of Downing or Young.

Just what Villa need to pull clear of the drop zone, time for Gyan to step up. Thought Bent mite go someone better then Villa though.

Bent has scored goals wherever he has played, yet doesn't seem to stick around at any club for very long.

A good signing for Aston Villa. Not surprised Sunderland cashed in as Gyan seems to be settling in quite well.

Good signing but a bit overpriced You've changed your tune. When I was saying Bent has to go the World Cup you were rubbishing those claims and saying that Heskey was vital for the England cause and that it would have been madness to take Bent instead of him. Your view was nothing to do with form either because Bent was on fire pre the world cup yet now he's slightly off form you are saying 'good signing'.

Great signing by villa, if he scores a few to keep them up then he'll return the fee a few times over.
Sunderland paid 10 but it could raise to 16.5 if certian goal ans game targets were met.
Seeing as he did well there I'd guess they were met so you couldn't see Sunderland willing to takes less then 16.5 so 18 seems about right

He's a proven scorer in the premiership but done nothing in an England shirt. Bit like Andy Cole, scored for fun in the prem but exposed as the 1 dimensional donkey he was for England

Leaving a club on the up, for the sick man of the premier league. Villa are involved in a relegation scrap, Sunderland in a Europa League push. Bizarre.

Villa are a bigger club though, Blackpool are higher than Villa, doesn't mean players would rather go there

It is odd. But then I suppose it must be to do with wages. Villa will probably be saved now but if not they will face a very uncertain future

Villa are a bigger club though, Blackpool are higher than Villa, doesn't mean players would rather go there The difference between Sunderland and Villa isn't anywhere near comparable to the difference between Blackpool and Villa. Blackpool aren't even an established PL club for one thing. Villa probably have a 20-30% bigger fanbase, that's it. Oh and a better 'history' but that doesn't keep in you in the premier league. It's a weird career move at this moment in time no matter which way you cut it really.

I would think its more location location location. Leaving up there - is not everyone's cup of tea.
Its a great signing for Villa. The guy is a goal scorer. In my view, its better then spending 10 million on a foreigner who has never proved they can cut it.

Did you mean living up there? I would be more than happy to leave it Agree with you it is potentially a very good signing for Villa who at the moment would be happy to just steer clear of the relegation places

Villa aren't going down, they're in a false position, they have far too much quality to be relegation fodder. Same as Liverpool, yeah they are shite right now but, again, they have top players and will be okay
